Yet another Child Tax Credit Over Payment!

Please be gentle with me I am feeling a bit fragile today!
So the postman was quite early this morning and I find on the door mat a famous brown envelope from HMRC.
I open it to find a lovely overpayment from 9 years ago that they are demanding in full.
What a blast from the past! Can they really badger me for this money i apparently owe?? or are they trying to con me?? As far as I am aware I always check my renewal form and send it back on time and if it is incorrect i always amend it as soon as possible.
I'm sure there is a Limitation Act 1980 Section 5 ?an action founded on simple contract shall not be brought after the expiration of six years from the date on which the cause of action accrued.?
What are your views on this op's???

I don't think the limitation act is applicable to tax credit overpayments, but your best bet is to make an appointment with the CAB and get some proper advice about whether you have to repay the money.
Are you still receiving tax credits? If you are then they should reduce your current payments until they have clawed back the money you owe, I don't think they can reduce them by any more than 25% and you can ask for them to review the situation if to will be left in severe hardship by them reducing your current tax credits.
If it is a relatively small amount that you owe then contact them and agree a repayment plan spread over a period of time.
Best bet is to take some advice from the CAB as the inland revenue are highly unlikely to write this money off unless to can prove that the overpayment is due to their errors.

Thanks for your reply. I was thinking maybe cab would be my next avenue. I still receive CTC maybe I will ring them and see whether they can take it out of my current award in installments they did ask for d/d to be set up but I will see what options I have regarding payment.
