Child tax credits, new partner.

Hypothetical situation.

As a single working parent of one child, I can claim child tax credit, and the childcare element of working tax credit, but no further working tax credit. This adds up to c. £5K, which all goes on childcare expenses.

If I were to move in with a new partner who is a higher-earner tax payer, not the father of the child and therefore with no financial responsibility for it, would I lose the child tax credit?

Trying to understand how the system works.

Yes, you would be deemed to be a couple. You have to claim as a couple but doubt you would be entitled to anything if he is a high earner.

you would also lose C Benefit even though he is not the child's father

if he earns more than 60000. between 50 & 60 you get to keep some of it

Thank you both. That's what I thought, just wanted to check.
