advice about car write off, (and sympathy) please;)

I got squished in my car last week. Was not my fault, and am injured with severe whplash and entire body in bad muscle spasm, as is my 10yr old daughter:(.

Car is a write off!

Advice now needed (please) for car issues.

Car was an M reg toyota previa. We have been offered £2000 for it, as the insurance co. say that is what it is worth.

Looking on the internet previa's of the same age and milage can't be found for less than £2995.
I don't therefore think we should accept the insurance offer, but DH is being soft and does. (altho he is fuming about lack of decent offer!)

I would like to know if we can challenge the offer, and whether if we do they will then with draw their offer completely.

Do insurance co. expect people to challenge them, and if they do would they be likely to listen to us if we provide proof of not being able to replace our car with what they are offering us.

sorry if I am rambling, but on many strong painkillers and feeling rather odd!

Thankyou in advance.

AFAIK it means it was taken as a trade-in and the dealer can't be arsed to do anything with it so would rather sell it on, cheaply. (Or at least that's the impression they want to give Wink)

psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 16:49

ahhh, thankyou.

all this does give me lots of hope of at least convincing DH to challenge now. he is of the mind of accepting just cos he can't be arsed to look for proof. I have been looking, but you wonderful guys here have provided lots more. Makes it lots easier for me as I keep getting spelling wrong and go to lots of weird n wondefful places insteadBlushWink

On a slight tangent, I was hit 2 years ago (woman reversed into me while I was stationary behind her !!) and the bumper was damaged.

Two days later - still driving the car as it was booked in to be repaired but drivable I was stopped at a roundabaout. The massive articulated lorry beside me also stationary started his engine and drove into the side of me - making a massive dent along the entire length of my car. The car was again drivable but very squashed and written off as it was not worth repairing.

The insurance claim was a nightmare as it involved two other drivers in two different incidents. I challenged the value but they refused to give me any more (mind you in my case the car was pretty old so they may have had a point)

psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 17:06

Shock at lazycow at two crunches in two days. and hugs. how scary for it being big huge lorry too!!

I am really hoping tho that we can challenge and they listen.

Our car was written off in 2001 and we were offered "book price" for it- but the book price for selling it, not for buying one. We lost out big-time over that and were told that's how it works.

psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 21:00

so what does 'book price' mean exactly? sorry for sounding thick but I have no idea on all these termsBlush.

we just been out car hunting, and there is absolutely nada out there previa wise at all. am wnating to go for the same car agin simply because I am completely terrified about driving again, let alone drivnign and getting used to a new car. at least getting another previa means i know what to do with them....

What about getting a Lucida or Eminem or whatever the grey imports are called? Same car but cheaper.

Sew on your own sequins next time then! phnar!!!!

edam · 31/05/2006 22:55

Psycho, I agree with Misdee about changing the car seats – they won't be safe to use again. I used to work for a company that does crash tests and honestly, it is really important to scrap seats after a crash whether or not you can see any damage and whether or not the child was in the seat at the time.

psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 22:56

ooh nooooo.....please sew for meGrin!!!

just don't be mean bout spellin, just cos i fuzzy headedBlush

psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 22:58

edam. does that mean i have to provide proof for reciepts tho? one is brand new so that shouldn't be a problem, but the other two we got ages ago...

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 22:59

in actual fact there are three car seats and two booster seats. doe they all need replacing?

OP posts:
psychomum5 · 31/05/2006 23:01

and sorry to be a pain again........what about the pushchairs in the boot? would they have been 'jiggled' to much too to use safely agin?

OP posts:
FlameBoo · 31/05/2006 23:04

To my mind, they can come and see your carseats to know their exisitence - it seems madness to ask you for reciepts for them... I would have no idea where to find the one for B's, let alone Emrys's.

Think of the shiney new carseats you could get Grin
