uh-oh best be warned in case we all say horrid things about her - on the website linked martin lewis has stopped anyone discussing this in his chat forum because of worries about it being contentious and his legal team have warned him off

Yes I'm amazed she does those dodgy adverts - it's really BAD

wessexgirl · 05/05/2006 19:40

Gah, I was going to post this, but you've beaten me to it. Her doing those loan ads has been a massive pet hate of mine for ages.

Mind you - I haven't seen so many of them lately, so perhaps she's got the message.

Tortington · 05/05/2006 20:43

its not carols fault - its the stupid fuckers who get the loans

JanH · 05/05/2006 21:04

"The use of a trusted maths genius to sell a product many people don't fully understand is an extremely powerful concept"

Agreed the people who sign up are not very clever, but maybe if the ads used Tim Nice-but-Dim or some other famously thick person to recommend the company even the not very clever ones would go hey....just a minute....

She gets paid a lot of money for doing this knowing full well (as a trusted maths genius) how it works so yes, it is her fault.

Tortington · 05/05/2006 21:17

i ynderstand the clever marketing ploy. But in a society hell bent on making money over and above being sensible. i dont think its worse than many other marketing ploys.

madmarchhare · 05/05/2006 21:29

Agree with custy, its like watchdog, dont think Ive ever seen anyone on there that hasnt been 'ripped off' because they didnt read the small print.

JanH · 05/05/2006 21:33

It's not quite the same as the classic Watchdog burning your mouth on one of those jam toastie things or McD's coffee though, is it?

Of course there are dim people out there who will always be suckered but should someone of CV's "stature" be party to suckering them? Doesn't she have any scruples?

madmarchhare · 05/05/2006 21:34

Is it the same as June Whitfields doing the over 50 Sunlife plan thing? Grin.

madmarchhare · 05/05/2006 21:35

Whitfield (note, I am not turning into my gran who likes to say Cliff Richards)

waterfalls · 05/05/2006 21:40

I agree with custardo too, its really upto the individual tp read the small print, no-one has a gun held to their head, and personaly I think if you are desperate for money, but a bit dim, then it would'nt make the blindest bit of difference who was advertising it, its the wording of the advert that pulls people in.

Moomin · 05/05/2006 21:41

yes! and christophy timother does one as well

at college when i was doing my degree and for my job sometimes now we have to analyse adverts and 'semiotically deconstruct' them - in other words, take them apart looking at what all the images, sounds, colours, speech, etc are actually 'saying' to people's brains and therefore manipulating them. i really fancy doing this on the carol vorderman ones and also those BLOODY picturethis.com loan adverts too. will wait to see which one comes on first when i watch daytime tv on monday and then see if i can be bothered... but despite their crassness they really are designed to make people feel much more comfortable about borrowing money compared to the much more 'banky' and business-like load adverts for the high st banks

OP posts:
Tortington · 05/05/2006 21:43

does that make you a hairy ( harey?) granny then madmarch? Grin

Moomin · 05/05/2006 21:43

and i absolutely disagree that CV doesn't affect the viewer. It's got everything to do with her and the image she has. the picturethis ones don't have a household name so they use other ploys to 'befriend' the viewer. it's sickening

lol, Ive started having one of those bags of wheat round me neck, so it must custy.
