End of year accounts?

rickman · 02/05/2006 10:02

Am I right in thinking that the end of the financial year is April? If so, how soon after this date are accounts normally available?

Also if the Companies House website says that the next set of accounts don't have to be submitted before December 2006, is it possible to see them earlier?

Thank you. :)

Sorry don't know where that question mark it title came from.

Depends on the company's financial year, doesn't always end in April. Can't see next years until they're submitted I'm afraid

Roobie · 02/05/2006 10:07

5 April is the end of the tax year and is more relevant for individuals. Companies can prepare their accounts for any 12-month period and accounts have to be submitted to Companies House within 10 months of the year-end. So if submission is required by December 2006 we are probably talking about the company's accounts for the year ended 28 Feb 06 - it won't be possible to see them before they are filed however.

rickman · 02/05/2006 10:10

Yes, just checked the last lot of accounts were from September 2003 until February 2005. So I would imagine that new accounts have now been prepared. Can I really not see them until they are forwarded to Companies House?

Can someone official ask to see them ie CSA?

it might be as simple as that they haven't been done. companies are given plenty of time to complete accounts since it's a big job for a lot of companies

I used to be the administrator for an organisation and had to provide the accountant with all the info needed for them to prepare the accounts. before that they were just a big bag of receipts under my desk!

Roobie · 02/05/2006 10:31

Yes, if it's a small company then the chances are the Feb06 accounts haven't been prepared yet. If they don't have an accounting system or accounting software which enables a set of accounts to be pulled off at any point then it will be a major bookkeeping operation to prepare the accounts - they'll probably be working towards the 10-month filing deadline.

rickman · 02/05/2006 10:37

Ok maybe I'm assuming a bit much in thinking that they might be complete already, but they must surely be a work in progress.

I just really want to know whether the only way to see the accounts of a Ltd Co, is through Companies House? Also if someone asked you to submit your latest accounts, would you have to send the most recent ones or could you send the ones from a previous year?

OP posts:
Cappucino · 02/05/2006 10:45

if you are asked for the latest ones, it should be your latest accounts that you send, if they are complete

but again, if they're not complete (ie a bag of receipts) they're no use to anyone as a work in progress

foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 10:45

you could ask the company yourself

It's very unlikely that they would have done them already (unless requested by a bank or official body). If they don't have to submit them till Dec06, then I doubt you would be able to see them earlier.

anchovies · 02/05/2006 10:46

As far as I know the only way is through companies house. Do you mean if someone wanted accounts part way through a financial year? If so then they would send the accounts they filed at the end of the most recent financial year.

rickman · 02/05/2006 10:49

Sorry I'm probably making things more complicated with the way I'm explaining it.

If the end of this company's financial year is Feb 06, if they were approached in say June, and asked for their most recent accounts would they have to send the ones for the year ended Feb 06, even if they don't have to be submitted to Companies House until December 06?

Is that any clearer? Probably not. lol

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 10:53

who is approaching them? if it was a bank who lends them money then I imagine they would probably feel obliged to send their most up to date accounts

if it was, say, a member of the general public they could (I suppose) tell them to get stuffed!

rickman · 02/05/2006 10:55

Well hopefully it would be the CSA.

It is complicated but exp has managed to wriggle out of paying the correct amount of maintenance because last year he received a huge payment from his business, which was money he was owed. The CSA are not able to include this as income in their calculations. His new accounts should show a more realistic wage and I hope would mean I'd receive a decent amount of maintenance.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 10:59

oh I see

you can request accounts but the company would normally send you their most recent published accounts (rather than their most up to date ones if you see what I mean)

I would hope the CSA had access to other areas like his PAYE payments, NI contributions etc.

I remember this from before - he has an accountant doesn't he? I hope you won't be cheated out of money this time round Sad

Cappucino · 02/05/2006 11:02

if he's self assessed for tax and NI he won't have to fill in his tax return for the year ending April 06 until the end of Jan 07 tho'

foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 11:06

I thought he had made himself an employee (or am I remembering another story??!!)

poor you rickman, what an awful way for your ex to behave

anchovies · 02/05/2006 11:08

But if he's a director he'll get a self assessment anyway. Not sure there's anyway to get round waiting until dec/jan? How unfair of him

foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 11:10

I thought the CSA did it from his self assessment (if self employed) form rather than the company accounts - not that that will make any difference to your timing

rickman · 02/05/2006 11:12

Yes he has made himself an employee, so his income is made up of a basic wage plus directors benefits.

I really hoped that if he was getting new accounts done, then I might be able to get some decent maintenance and sort myself out. At the moment I am really struggling, ds has just had a birthday and it has left me really short of money.

In the meantime, exp is swanning around admiring his new kitchen and making plans for a make over of his living room. One of the texts he sent me last night, had some comment about sooner or later I might admit I made a mistake in leaving him. Angry No doubt this is all part of his plan to make sure I suffer for as long as possible, he knows I will make sure the kids are ok and that I will have to go without.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 02/05/2006 11:16

did you see the programme on bbc1 (a while back) where they showed the benefits agency pursuing (like rottweiliers!) people who they thought were cheating on their benefits?

They actually went to their houses (stake-out style) and looked at the sort of purchases they had been making.

What a shame they can't do that with your ex and have a look at his bank accounts.

rickman · 02/05/2006 11:22

I know Angry. If they had the power to look at his bank accounts, this could be sorted straight away. It's so bloody infuriating. I am thinking of writing to my MP but I don't really know where to start.
