Next doors pigeons - wnere do I stand?

PanicPants · 29/04/2006 20:22

Next door keeps racing pigeons and keeps them in a huge, very expensive looking wooden outhouse.

I've never really been that bothered with them before but recently the bird poo seems to be increasing.

He lets them out everyday and they spends hours just flying in circles around our the gardens in the neighbourhood, swooping over our garden the most to land on top of their enclosure.

The poo's all over our fence, the grass, trees, patio, conservatory windows, garden table and chairs. There's no way I'll be able to let ds play outside this summer.

So my questions are:

What legal rights have I (if any) to ask next door to keep the pigeons inside?

How can I ask him without getting his back up (we don't really talk to each other, it's just a hello if we both happen to meet outside.)

Does bird flu affect pigeons?

How long does the bird flu virus stay alive in bird droppings? i.e., does dried poo pose the same risk as fresh poo?

in the meanwhile you could try cds on the washing line or scarecrows and the emitters

PanicPants · 29/04/2006 22:20

What washing line? Haven't bothered with one due to bloody pigeons.

Dp's suggested Dick Dastardly........

Hey Panicpants - my neighbour two doors down keeps pigeons in his garden.

I'm really feeling for you - we have bird crap on our washing and down our windows regulary.

Good Luck!

PanicPants · 30/04/2006 18:13

Girlsmum, does it annoy you? Are you worried about bird flu?

You don't live in wiltshire do you? lol :)

Hi PanicPants - yes the bird poo gets on my nerves, I never thought about bird flu being a risk in their poo though, maybe I'm naiive?

However, we have an access road running down along the back along all of our gardens and my daughter was splashing in a puddle out there yesterday - when my dh realised the puddle was from the guy hosing down the shed where the pigeons are kept - my dh bought dd back in then.

I live in hampshire.

PanicPants · 02/05/2006 09:36

I don't know if it's a risk or not, just would rather be safe than sorry.

I wondered if you lived in our street! But obviously not!

I read somewhere about someone buying a stuffed owl and putting that in a prominent position in their garden to stop pigeons.

I agree with previous advice. Check with the planning department about whether planning permission was required for the bird house - was it built after you moved in? If so, you should have been notified of any application for planning permission and given the opportunity to object.

Also check with environmental health. There may be restrictions on the numbers of birds he can keep or he may be breaching health regulations.

zippitippitoes · 04/05/2006 10:37

have you got an update at all...from council?

Freckle · 04/05/2006 18:51

Another thing that occurred to me is that if your neighbour is causing a nuisance which can affect the health or safe enjoyment of someone's home, then environmental health must take action.

I would think that pigeon sh*t all over your garden could well fall into that category.

Regarding pigeons. We have recently bought a bungalow and next door is an old man of 88 who keeps pigeons and has approx. 4/5 Coops one of which is close to the side fence. Could you advise if this is legal?

guitarfangirl · 17/07/2020 18:39

To start with, we have been living in our Property, 9 years, we have a large Garden, the Old lady Died, next door, and a man moved in, He has put 90 foot Pigeon lofts, all along the the Boundary wall with another pigeon loft, about 20 foot along the width of his garden, every day, I have to get the Hose pipe out and wash and scrub the Pigeon poo off the children’s slide Trampoline and the cover on the paddling pool, and chairs ETC
I have heard it mention, that racing pigeon don’t poo in flight, I beg to differ, I have seen them poo with my on eyes, I’m not against anybody keeping Racing pigeons, but how many does one person need, I have counted over 70, plus a lot of noice coming from the 90ft lofts
I think he his breeding them, maybe to sell, the start of the 90ft lofts has small divided areas,

Phoned environment Health , Bridgend Council, I was told, it is natural for pigeons to poo in the swimming pool, I also mentioned that in England, they are only allowed 25, Pigeons, she replied this is not England
