Norwich Union refusing to pay life insurance

Friend of a friends ex husband (not divorced)has recently died from stomach cancer (in his 40's). Years ago it was suggested he have his gall bladder removed but he didnt and he was advised to cut down on drinking and smoking. Because of this Norwich Union are refusing to pay out. I have heard that Norwich Union are notorious for this, anyone else heard similar?

He died in October, shortly after she had a baby by her current partner, got pneumonia and septacaemia (sp?) and spent 4 months in hospital. Two of her toes are now just about to self amputate as if she hasn't got enough to worry about.

Norwich Union have taken 6 months to make up their minds and they've said no. She has massive debts built up now but at least the mortgage company are giving her a breather.

She is going to get legal advice but I suggested she go to the papers too.

We have two policies with them and I'm now thinking of changing.

I think Norwich Union were on Watchdog a while ago with something similar. Do WD have a website?

Watchdog does, with a contact us form.... give them an e-mail

Just signed with NU, they were pains about registering at all- oh bugger!

She can also go to OFT, Banking Code and the Insurance Ombudsman to make an official complaint!

She needs to get herself a solicitor to look at the terms of the policy and see whether NW have a leg to stand on. There is enough at stake to sue for.

Personal finance pages of the Guardian on Saturday have an agony aunt type person who sorts out problems like this. Check out their website.
