MOT out of date can I still use my car

My car was due for its first MOT at beginning of March and I forgot all about it. Cannot get an appointment for retesting until Tuesday, can I legally drive it?

no.

beckybrastraps · 21/04/2006 14:27

Only to the test centre.

dizzydo · 21/04/2006 14:34

oh no! Sad

Thanks.

Not only is it illegal to drive a car without a valid MOT certificate, it will invalidate your insurance. Not worth the risk.

SaintGeorge · 21/04/2006 14:40

You must have a pre-booked appt at the Test Centre before you drive it there as well. If you are stopped, the police will check.

tissy · 21/04/2006 14:45

I drove my car for several months (including abroad) without an MOT certificate (and consequently without insurance)as I forgotShock. The reason was that my tax was due six months later, and so there was nothing to remind me to get it! Now of course they virtually coincide, so i don't have a problem!

SaintGeorge · 21/04/2006 14:47

I have found \link{http://www.motcentrefinder.co.uk/nav/reminders/mot_reminders.php\this} very useful.

dizzydo · 21/04/2006 14:48

Thanks all. How fab is this site, you can get answers to any probs you have, I wouldnt know where to start without it.

Even tho you have all scared the life out of me. Grin

I had a good ole google for the 'no MOT am I still insured' question and IIRC (it was quite a while ago) you are actually still insured.

Any police officers / legal bods / insurance reps know the definitive answer ?

NannyL · 21/04/2006 19:07

Im sure if you needed to claim the fact that the car was being driven illegally (ie NO MOT) would make it very easy for insurance people to refuse to pay out!

cod · 21/04/2006 19:09

oh yes and they DO catch poeple a LOT

hub2dee · 21/04/2006 19:56

Cod, do you know - for sure - that having an exppired MOT means insurance cover is automatically invalid ?

georginarf · 21/04/2006 19:59

my insurance is only valid if you have a current MOT because i checked it once before when my car failed Blush

might not explicitly state it on every insurance policy. I'm guessing this is what invalidates your insurance, not a blanket rule for all insurance IYSWIM

saralou100 · 21/04/2006 20:03

last year my car was written off by some little b*ta*s breaking into it 3 days before my son was born! i did not have valid mot due to heavily pregnant state and i was convinced the insurance co would refuse to pay, they didn't thank god but they got away with giving me less money and i couldn't argue it!

cod · 21/04/2006 20:14

yes id say it is

cece · 21/04/2006 20:28

Another question.

My MOT is due on 5th May. However, I am likely to be moving house that week. Can I get it done in advance but have it dated for the 5th? For example next week?

Squarer · 21/04/2006 20:35

You can have it done 2 weeks in advance cece

hub2dee · 21/04/2006 21:03

I'm pretty sure it's actually 4 weeks.

It's a good thing to do because you then have either a 13 month MOT or 1 month in which to fix any fail items...

Squarer · 21/04/2006 21:06

You are correct Hub - I just googled it and it says 28 days.
BTW, how is your massive erection? Have you unveiled it for the year ahead yet? Is it dead? [straight faced blatant hijack combo emoticon]

Squarer · 21/04/2006 21:07

(prays fervently that it was actually hub with a tree fern....)

hub2dee · 21/04/2006 21:17

That was DC, actually.

But now you're asking, gorgeous...

hub2dee · 21/04/2006 21:24

Just winding you up. LOL.

Well.... the fronds are mostly intact but verrily 1/2 the length of each one has got dead crappy brown bits on and then fronds are not worth saving... Sad

However, the plant has survived Winter and I can (just) see that inside the crown new fronds are a-waiting and do fervently hope that they will expose themselves imminently. Keeping the thing healthy during a hosepipe ban will however be a grand pain.

Thank you for enquiring after my erection. It grows one inch per year, which is slow, but not many men can say that.

Grin
Squarer · 21/04/2006 21:31

I knew it was you, you minxer.
DC is just not the type....

I might unveil mine tomorrow then - we have to wait a while longer ooop north, but that is balanced against having no hosepipe ban (admittedly yet). Let me know if you want me to send water...

An inch a year huh? How old did you say you were again??? Grin

Squarer · 21/04/2006 21:32

Oh, terrible typo. I meant your plant...
