its fully paid for, no finance, book price on it is 800pounds.

i currently pay about 30per month for insurence and use about 30pounds for petrol per month. i also have use of peters car, which is paid for by disability. but the running costs of his car is high. i dont use it that often and use about 30pounds of fuel per month. we need to keep that one as its the one peter and his vad and equipment fit into.

if i sell my car, will i find i am filling up more with petrol on peters car and finacially be no better or even worse off.

i really cant decide.

'extra' cars can add up... you pay depreciation on its value per year, £150 odd tax per year, £40 odd quid for the MOT (disregarding any work it may need to get through), maybe a service or occasional emergency repair, wear and tear every now and then to keep it going (ie. tyres / exhaust / shockers), plus the insurance you mention...

Personally I think you are paying a heck of a lot more to have 2 cars. We are in a similar situation, as dh has a mobility car (but probably not for much longer, as his treatment is going so well).

But I can't stand to not have my own car, so we struggle along - partly due to the fact he won't have it forever as well.

mmm think i would consider selling it. Would say no way if it was the families only car but its not.

sorry, should also say, once peter has his transplant and is home, then we lose his car, as it will have to go back.

but in the mean time you could be saving that extra insurance, tax, wear and tear. It won't be taken off him straight away will it?

misdee · 19/04/2006 10:37

as soon as he gets out of hospital after transplant yes.

but thats ludicrous he wont be fantastically fit and healthy will he as soon as he comes out of hospital. It makes me sooooo cross
