how much per month is your electricity bill?

I found out that one of my friends pays £50 per month electricity on a 3 bed house and 4 people in it.They think this is excessive and someone is not getting things right. So I thought I'd check and see how much we pay as we live similarly. We pay £46 a month direct debit.Which is roughly the same.Their other friends in similar situation only pay half that amount? How can this be?And I'd like to know by comparing a few peoples charges which should be the right amount? So please can some of you tell me how much electricity you pay if you are in a similar situation?

clop · 12/04/2006 14:56

We have a pre payment meter, which are more expensive than normal, but even then, we don;t use more that 20 quid a month. (3 of us, un-double glazed crappy 2 bed house)

SomethingAboutMary · 12/04/2006 15:02

We pay £19 a month on a 3 bed with 2 adults & 2 kids!

queenrollo · 12/04/2006 15:46

right there is seriously something wrong with my meter.....i had a letter off npower this am telling me my usage is £140.50 a month.

we moved to them and it brought our monthly direct debit down to £65 a month and now they are doubling it to make sure we cover our costs.
we do have night storage heaters, but other than that i can't think what is using so much power.
it's starting to really get to me now.

expatinscotland · 12/04/2006 15:47

£75/month for a tiny 2-bed flat on the 2nd floor. we have no gas. everything is electric. but scottish power is still a f*cking rip off.

schneebly · 12/04/2006 15:52

Shock at how much we are spending compared to others! We too have a pre-payment card meter but currently spend about £80 per month for a 3 bed semi with 2 adults and 2 kids!

We have storage heaters but only use 2 of them in the whole house - we have 1 TV which is on quite a lot, 1 PC on most of the time and I use the washing machine once a day but surely it shouldnt cost this much!

poi · 12/04/2006 15:53

We're with Scottish Power too and think they are a complete rip off, pay £35 a month on 2 bed flat, no storage heaters even . Will make the effort to switch suppliers asap

charliecat · 12/04/2006 15:54

My electrics about 6/7 a week through prepayment keys in winter.
Gas 10/12 a week through winter, couple of pounds in summer.

Janh · 12/04/2006 15:55

schneebly, can you choose who supplies yours or is it up to a landlord?

There's a company called \link{http://www.ebico.co.uk/en/open/pages/powertariffsen.php\Equipower} which charges the same rate to everybody, whether they're on a meter or billed quarterly or pay by monthly DD, and they should be much cheaper for you if you can switch.

kid · 12/04/2006 15:58

We are with Eastern Energy, we are paying £68 a month for the winter period, I expect it to be adjusted in the summer. We have storage heaters but only use one to heat the whole house (3 bed semi-detatched with 2 adults and 2 kids)

MrsSpoon · 12/04/2006 15:59

We pay about £80 a month for electricity which I think is shocking considering we have gas central heating/hot water and gas hob. Three bedroomed Victorian semi with converted cellar where DH's office is, so lights on there almost all day. Two adults and two children in the house.

This month I am definately changing suppliers.

Janh · 12/04/2006 16:01

We have 3-bed Victorian mid-terrace, with open stairs to attic, semi-insulated roof and very draughty - ours has been £45 for elec and £40 for gas (have gas CH and hob) but that was before the last increase so it would be 20% more now I suppose.

trix1 · 12/04/2006 16:03

Well im really shocked - I received a letter from Scottish Power saying to cover our usage of Gas and Elec then our monthly payments have to increase from £75.00 a month to £120.00 a month! Who are the best or are they all the same?

schneebly · 12/04/2006 16:04

Thanks JanH - I appreciate that, never really thought about changing supplier but will have a look! Cheers! Smile

Janh · 12/04/2006 16:09

Using storage heaters means that your daytime use is charged at a higher rate than it would be otherwise (did you see \link{http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk?topicid=1375&threadid=162206&stamp=060411104219\custardo's thread} about being overcharged because they're on Economy 7? And they don't even have NSHs Shock)

expatinscotland · 12/04/2006 16:17

When we tried to switch suppliers, they socked us w/this HUGE bill, which we couldn't pay, so we had to stick w/Scottish Power.

F*ckers.

Tortington · 13/04/2006 02:56

no we do NOT have storage heaters - yet our meter is set FOR storage meters.

apparently this is our responsability to make sure and find out - so we have t pay. so we spoke to a nice man at ENERGYWATCH who thought this rather an unusual situation. they are the leccy regulator - so i hope they shit themselves and give me money back.

am seriously researching getting a fcking generator - but think it would be too noisy.

trix1 · 14/04/2006 13:19

Ive just used the website Uswitch and tranferred to Seeboard who claim to save me £300.00 per year.

Janh · 14/04/2006 13:29

custy, that's nuts - they can't seriously expect someone moving into a house without storage heaters to make sure it's not on the storage heater tariff???? I hope energywatch do go after them for that.

There was a family on the telly once who had an exercise bikewith a generator set up in the front room and the kids had to pedal it if they wanted to watch TV - how about getting one of those?

charliecat · 14/04/2006 13:30

how do you know if you are on economy 7 then?

Janh · 14/04/2006 13:31

Well exactly, cc!

I think there might be 2 dials or even 2 actual meters but you'd have to go looking.

charliecat · 14/04/2006 13:42

oh yes :) I see now, my mums on Econ 7 then, not much use given shes tucked up in bed early with a hot water bottle but she wont swap.
