dont know if anyone has been in this situation or can help me, couldn't sleep for worry last night. well yesterday all excited about to pick up my new car and was part ex my old car, when i say old is a 2002 model so not that old. 15 mins before going to get our new car the garage rings and tells us he has done a hpi check on our car which come back saying our car was a cat b write off which means the body shell of the car to be crushed and the vechicle never to be returned to the road.Shock we went back to the garage we bought it from and he is looking into it etc etc. so in the mean time i have no car and a car sat on my drive that is worthless. anyone had any experience in this please help me going out of my mind. thanks sorry for rambling.

Have you checked the details on the DVLA website to see what the log book and mot certificates say?

Freckle · 13/04/2006 14:47

Are you a member of the AA or RAC? If so, you could book an inspection with them. You will have to pay but should get the cost back from the dealer.

heavenis · 13/04/2006 14:55

Sorry I haven't read all this thread but did the car have a VIC test before it was put back on the road. I know from DH that certain write offs have to have this test before they can be but back on the road. Do you have a local DVLA who you could check with.

So the garage that sold you the car paid you money and took it back?

pandagirl03 · 26/04/2006 08:55

hello charliecat

sorry just noticed your reply. The garage who sold me the car wouldn't deal with me any more. but the previous owner of the car, which happens to be a very good friend and next door neighbour of the bloke at the garage came out and paid me cash and took the car away. Trading standards are still investigating the case.

will you hear back from TS about it?

pandagirl03 · 26/04/2006 16:27

i'm not sure. Quite possible because we had to ring dvla and some other people about car. Trading standards said they have never had a case anything like it before and the hpi company said they have only ever heard of 1 case before so very rare.

You could contact the police as well as trading standards as the dealer may have committed a criminal offence. If there are certain checks which you have to do before selling a car and the dealer didn't (because he couldn't be bothered), then he may have knowingly sold a car which might have been a write-off.

I'm glad you got your money back, but I do think you should take it further in case he makes a habit of being so careless with customers' safety.

Hi there, I know that this is an old thread, however I wanted to tell you all about doing a HPI check when you buy a second hand car (which I have just done) and the bloke at the garage wanted me to buy the check through him at £75 which I thoght was outrageaous and went o have a look on the web to see what they cost there...

Well I found a site www.comparecarchecks.com that listed alot of providers that offered the same service from £5, and it suggested the right sort of cover I needed.

So be careful not to get stiched and try out the site, its worth it...

Hope this helps
