Has anyone had a grant for a new boiler? Local council or government dosh?

I'm exploring this at the moment, but thought I'd put out a call to draw on MN expertise. We have to get our old combi boiler replaced with a new Worcester Bosch boiler; the old one's 7 years old and hasn't actually been condemned but is inefficient. Do you have to be on benefits to get energy-saving grants? Or can you just be skint Grin?

Someone I know who gets tax credits got a grant from the local council for her new one

Fauve · 10/04/2006 14:48

Thanks! I'm having to do this v quickly as we are midway through a kitchen installation. Looks like we can get a discount through our council, on some models...

Am I right that condensing boilers aren't that highly thought of? I think our building project manager is suggesting a Worcester Bosch Combi - anyone got one of those?

TIA...

In fact, it looks like we could get a Worcester Bosch Greenstar Junior 24i for £584.60 - which is one recommended by an MNer's dh fairly recently (thank God for the archives).

Fauve where can you get it for that price..I've only seen it for 700.00 or more?

Fauve · 10/04/2006 15:02

It's through \link{http://www.uselessenergy.org.uk/default.asp\EnergySmart}, who work with our council and other councils supposedly to reduce energy consumption.

But our project manager is suggesting a 'top of the range, Rolls Royce' Bosch Worcester 350 cdi, which would give us 14 litres of water per minute - and costs £840.27 through EnergySmart. Hmmmmmm...

Hi Fauve... it was this thread that prompted me to start my own...
FioFio's quotes made me gasp...

clerkKent · 10/04/2006 15:26

Unfortunately EnergySmart's prices exclude VAT, so the 35CDi comes in at £987 - still cheaper than any other, but only by £127.

Fauve · 10/04/2006 15:45

ClerkKent, is that one a condensing boiler? On rummum's thread, pooka is saying building regs demand a condenser - but there are condensing combis.

yes, it is a condensing combi boiler. The new regs require any new boiler to be SEDBUK A or B rated - it is A (90.3% efficient). I am sure the EnergySmart site would not promote illegal boilers.

michellebe · 11/04/2006 08:31

i got help with a new boiler from a company called warmfront thats a scheme in derby dont know where you live but you could give them a ring am on working and child tax credits

GarfieldsGirl · 11/04/2006 08:39

You can get grants if not on benefits, but only a limited amount. dp gets DLA so we got max grant from \link{http://www.eaga.co.uk/Grants/warm_front.htm\warm front}

Fauve · 11/04/2006 13:31

Thanks for those, I looked at WarmFront, but we don't qualify for their grants - other people might find that info useful though.

Don't suppose anyone knows anything about wireless remote thermostats and how they work? Any info welcome! I'm a complete technophobe...
