need desperately to pass my driving test and get mobile as am feeling so trapped.have persuaded dh that we need to buy me a banger to get about in.went to look at a car this morning a little atsra-perfect. just trying to get an idea of insurance and it's going to nearly £700!!!Shock
the car is only costing £800!
There';s no way we can afford that. i feel like i'm never going to get anywhere at this rate.
if i don't have a car i won't be able to practice enough to pass my test- but i can't get a car cos the insurance is too high because i haven't passed my test!!!

does your dh drive? I think if you insured it in his name and you were a named driver it would be cheaper - but I'm no expert so don't take my word for it!

alexsmum · 08/04/2006 12:38

that's with him as named driver!!!!!

try the tips from \link{http://www.moneysavingexpert.com/cgi-bin/viewnews.cgi?newsid1092813037,41960,\moneysavingexpert} see if you can get it any cheaper following their guidelines.

alexsmum · 08/04/2006 12:49

cheers jools will have a look at that website. i'm 33 and have had a provisional license since i was 18!
it's like a no win situation.

Also try www.confused.com as they may be able to find a cheaper quote. Does your dh have any no claims bonus? If so, put him as the main driver with you as the named driver. I did this when insuring my car before dh passed his test. I was shocked at how little I to pay to add him to my insurance when, if he had been insuring in his own name, it would have cost a fortune.

alexsmum · 08/04/2006 12:57

dh has no no claims bonus as he has been driving a company car for the last 10 years. What we have done is put him as the main driver and me as a named driver and this is what it's coming up with-for a 10y/o astra!

confused.com is recommended on that link I sent you waterfalls

SomethingAboutMary · 08/04/2006 13:04

try this website...

moneysupermarket.com

NannyL · 08/04/2006 15:47

yes it is expensive.... but i think everyone has the same problem at some point.... just think next year it will be cheeper.

The point is you cost a lot to insure because you are a high risk and insurance companies need to cover the risk.

you may find a cheeper quote but dont expect it to be hundreds of pounds cheeper or anything!

charliecat · 08/04/2006 16:06

my dps insurance went from 200 to 220 to put me, learner driver on driving an N reg little polo.

BadHair · 08/04/2006 16:23

Older cars are often more expensive to insure as their security is not as good as newer ones.

alexsmum · 08/04/2006 17:55

i understand all that nannyme.however i still think i have a right to be pissed off as it's the difference between me having a car and not having one. Do you think that if i can only afford to spend £800 on a car that i can then afford to spend £700 on insurance?

katieww · 08/04/2006 18:01

Could you manage with a smaller car? I used to have an old Renault Clio which was cheap to insure.... What is the engine size of the Astra?

GarfieldsGirl · 08/04/2006 18:11

Have you though about getting a slightly older car. You could probably pick up a reasonably decent J-reg escort or something for about £300-£400, then it doesn't matter if you're only insured 3rd party because your excess is going to be more than the cars worth if you damage it.

Prufrock · 08/04/2006 18:20

Definately try for 3rd party on a car at that price - you will have a huge excess anyway, and do call every company you can -I had a huge range of quotes to insure me, a learner, on a policy in dh's name with me as named driver. Finally ended up with Tesco. And I hate to bear bad news but you will find that your insurance stays high until 1 year after you have passed your test, which is when you stop being a high risk driver.

heavenis · 08/04/2006 18:32

I would go for as cheaper car as poss insure it third party or third party fire and theft. On the third part put your dh as main driver.

alexsmum · 08/04/2006 20:12

the 'quote me happy' people just quoted me £1111!!! for 3rd part f/t!!!!! there's just no way! that's for a p reg . it's a 1.6 eng.

we are going to have to forget about this car and keep trying.

OP posts:
alexsmum · 08/04/2006 20:13

prufrock can i ask what kind of quote you got off tesco?

OP posts:
Prufrock · 08/04/2006 22:33

I pay £400 a year fully comp for a 3 year old Peugeot 307 that cost about £11,000. DH had about 3 or 4 years no claims. The excess for me driving is £400, for DH £150 I think. We do live in a very "safe" area as well.

Rowlers · 08/04/2006 23:10

Shop around.
My renewal from Zurich was £660.
Churchil's offering £350
Try a few online.
Try higher excess as with £800 car, you are unlikely to claim to be honest if car is damaged.
It doesn't take much damage to write a car off at that price.
Also, forfeit the courtesy car etc, reduce the number of miles you will do each year - it all brings it down.

Darciesmum · 09/04/2006 10:50

Alexmum i work for an insurance company, and its probably high because of the type of vehicle and its engine size, as you haven't passed your test i'd recommend a smaller car (smaller engine).

Does your husband still drive a company car, if not he could be the policy holder have you as the named driver and still use the No claims Bonus.

charliecat · 09/04/2006 10:56

think you need to go for a smaller engined car.

pandagirl03 · 11/04/2006 09:59

hello,

i think the insurance is high because the car you want to insure is a 1.6. i think maybe you should get a 1.0 or 1.2. Also you say your dh has no claims because he has been driving company cars, if you tell some insurance companys this and get a letter from dh works to say he hasn't had any accidents they accept this as no claims. hope this helps Smile
