Dh is out of the country for 4 months(military). back in March his self-assesment was returned because he had forgotten to sign it, and because he hadn't put down some information. I called them up to explain he was out of the country, and after loads of hassle because i wasn'#t Dh, they put me through to someone who gave me extra time to send form out to Dh to sign, which he has done. However the other information needed was on his P60 from last year, which i cannot find - anywhere. I contacted his military pay dept and they have apparently decided to switch off their entire computer network and cannot send a copy of his P60 till they are up and running again. I did try calling the IR about this but kept being told "we cannot talk to you about your dh's tax" and wouldn't even let me explain. So i wrote to them, however today they sent a letter, basically saying "we allowed your wife some extra time and you still haven't sent back the info we require so we are going to fine you £100". I feel this is really unfair, as its not my Dh's fault that the computers holding the information are down, and they have obviously ignored my letter.
Any advice as to what i can do now. I don't need this as I'm having a really hard time with the Ds while dh away.

have you got his final payslip from that tax year? Because if he was with the same employer for the whole year, all the information about total pay, tax/NI paid etc should be the same on there as it is on the P60. (We had to do dh's tax return with no p60 one year.)

TBH is don't know, . I'm just annoyed that they have fined him £100 for something thats outwith his control

If you have copies of your correspondence, I think you stand a good case of making an appeal to get the fine repaid.
Does your dh not have any access to email or post, that he could use either of those methods to contact IR himself?

I think the IR were generous allowing you extra time in the first place especially as it was you not your H who called.

Don't think I am getting at you or saying you have but I wonder how many people deliberately forget to sign their returns just like people don't sign cheques to buy extra time.

He only gets 20 minutes a week on the phone, and limited welfare access to a PC.
Kathlean, he was in the middle of a stressful time when filling it in, as anyone who's Dh goes away on detachments will testify, it can be stressful with everything that needs to be done. We tried to fix the problem, and couldn't because of circumstances outwith our control

Given his phone & email time are so limited, I think it would definitely be worth him writing directly to the IR, and asking them to reconsider their fine. He should explain his circumstances & say that the lack of signature was a genuine oversight.
It has to be worth a try.

The tax return is a legal form and has to be signed. They are sent out in April so even if someone is out of the UK for 4 months he has had enough time to do it. Also he would have had his P60 back in April or May.. it's hardly the fault of the IR or his pay office if you can't find it!!

I agree with Kathlean in that they were generous allowing him extra time in the first place (and people do "forget" to sign them on purpose...)

Sorry..
