Greataunt's money - is her carer thieving and what to do?

I went home the other week and helped my mom do the shopping etc for my great aunt. On taking the cash for the weekly shop my mom seemed to think her purse was a bit short.
Aunt told us what she'd spent that week - hairdresser etc but it was still short

Last week my mom wrote down exactly how much cash was left. This week 50 quid is missing Shock

The main suspect is her carer who comes for a couple of hours each day. Aunt admitted that she left the carer on her own in the flat one day this week.

Any advice on what to do and how to handle this?

it could easily be that she's forgotten something. I'd just keep a closer eye on things for a while.

No she won't have forgotten something and certainly not something for 50 quid! She thinks 3.50 for a bottle of ginger wine is splashing out

Plus she is in sheltered accommodation and doesn't go out to the shops or anywhere

She could have put it somewhere and forgotten. My fil used to do this all the time.

Put a note in her purse:
"Dear xxx
We know you are doing this and are keeping a close eye on you. Any evidence we find will mean immediate police involvement."

I once did something similar and it stopped.

TheBlonde · 22/03/2006 14:51

Oooh the note is purse thing is a good idea

Yes, if it is your aunt getting mixed up then no harm done.

lucy5 · 22/03/2006 14:53

But you are basically accusing someone of being a thief with not much evidence. I would monitor for a bit longer first. It would be awful to acuse someone who was innocent.

TheBlonde · 22/03/2006 14:54

No someone has definitely taken the money.

My aunt is blind and doesn't move or hide stuff or she'd never find it!!

The carer would have no reason to look in her purse though so there would be no accusation if we left a note

i think the note is a good idea, especially if the only reason she had to go into the purse would be to pinch from it Sad

she never goes into your aunts purse to take money for shopping or anything? does she ever go to the shops for her?

also i think she should change where she keeps her purse. maybe if she had a workman or meter reader or someone in the house they could have been in her purse, so changing where she keeps it maybe a good idea.

does anyone else come in? a homehelp or cleaner? does she keep her door unlocked?

TheBlonde · 22/03/2006 16:59

The carer doesn't go to the shops or anything else for her

Noone else would have been inside the house apart from the 2 old dears who live next door and come round for a cuppa etc

Doe she need to keep that much money in the house ? If she has sight problems could she be inaccurate as to what is in there and she has spent or perhaps get fleeced at the shop ? Deos the warden keep a close eye on such things ?

TheBlonde · 22/03/2006 17:09

She doesn't go out to the shops.
She only has 5 and 20 pound notes as she can tell which ones are which.
