Any ideas?

How would I find out how much I/We'd pay?

If it's a joint mortgage you both need life insurance. It would be useful but not essential for your DH to have mortgage protection on his earnings esp since he is the only one working so if he loses his job your mortgage gets paid for x length of time.

Don;t know how you find out how much except by seeing an IFA. They could give you some quotes.

Need as is in legally, or need as in to cover all bases?

Never had a mortage, but going by relatives/friends experiences, you should both have life insurance that covers critical illness and death.

If your major concern is paying off the mortgage then probably joint decreasing term life insurance joint because there would be childcare costs for your DH to meet in the event of your death and that can be a huge additional cost. Decreasing term means that the level of your cover will decrease over time (you'd pick the term the insurance runs over to be the same as the term your mortgage runs over, so that it should cover your remaining mortgage whenever you die that would mean that you'd get a smaller payout if you died near the end of the term than you would if you died near the beginning, but if your priority is covering the mortgage then that wouldn't be an issue, and it will be much cheaper than level term (which covers you for the same amount throughout the life of the policy). You can get Mortgage Term Insurance which is a type of decreasing term life insurance very specifically designed to pay off the mortgage (this may be the best bet for you).

You'll generally get Terminal Illness Cover included at no extra charge (basically, this pays out when you are diagnosed with a terminal illness rather than having to wait until you actually die).

You might also want to consider Critical Illness Cover and (as previously mentioned) Mortgage Protection Insurance and/or an Income Protection policy.

Legal and General do quotes for life insurance online (\link{http://www.legalandgeneral.com/life-cover/\www.legalandgeneral.com/life-cover/} that you could check out to give you an idea of likely premiums, but talking to an IFA may well be your best bet.
