Have lost my engagement ring in the house (Mum who lives with us and has dementia has in the past put things in the bin along with a used tiisue) Rang insurance company who have said I am covered and are referring the claim to another organisation. Insurance company have asked for a photo of the ring which I don't have but I do have the original receipt and an invoice for the cleaning approx two mnths ago. The ring cost £890 in 2006. If the claim is agreed will I get a cheque or a ring replacement voucher. Thanks al.

I had to make an insurance claim for a new sofa a couple of weeks ago and they offered me the choice of either store vouchers or a cheque. The vouchers were for a specific store and worked out about £150 more than the cheque but as I couldn't find one I wanted in there, we took the cheque.

Hmm I had really bad experience with being referred to third party for valuation. I had valuations for every item at the time of purchase, but the the third party deemed so of these items had no value!!!
I had an independent jeweller look at the originals and give me an up to date valuation.
I then had to escalate this to a complaint yes I eventually got a payout I was happy with dealing direct with the insurance company. The ombudsman ruled very firmly that you are entitled to a cheque for the full value do not be fobbed of with vouchers or the well we would get a discount if you took the vouchers this is not your problem.
Once you get your payout consider purchasing your replacement at auction as your money will go a lot further. Though pay for an independent valuation on the new item. I got a massive upgrade by doing this.

When my engagement ring was stolen I had to have another ring. The insurance company sent over a jeweller who made one the same.

The ombudsman is very very clear you do not have to accept another ring they have ruled on this many times. Insurance companies hope people do not know about this and say vouchers or replacement they are trying their luck.
