I bought a watch from Amazon for £20. Bargain, I thought- rrp is around £40-50. Dopey old me didn't clock the very long delivery time and charge of £8 until it was too late, but I trust Amazon and thought I'd be getting the real deal. (it was from a seller, but bought through amazon iyswim). The watch had lots and lots of positive reviews so I thought it would be ok.

Lo and behold, watch has arrived and I'm pretty sure it's fake. It's a well known brand (casio) and it just doesn't look or feel right, and the postmarks are from Singapore via Sweden :(

Seller has said I can return it, less the p&p. So I would be refunded £20, having lost £16 on p&p. Which hardly makes it worth doing.

At present I've demanded the entire refund including p&p from the seller, plus them covering the cost of return p&p- £36 total- Is this reasonable? I have a feeling they're not going to accept this.

What else can I do? Please help, £30 is a lot of money for me to lose right now.

Can you contact Amazon directly and tell them you think its a fake. They might intervene and give you a refund. Be careful about returning it though, you could end up on the wrong side of the law. My local trading standards bunch have been helpful in the past, try looking on your local council's website for their number and give them a ring.

Yup, report them to Amazon. They take this kind of thing very seriously and should intervene.

Partypartyrings · 11/09/2012 13:51

OK, I've reported it to Amazon and hope they will respond soon- they haven't yet. The seller is still claiming it's genuine but I'm certain it's fake.

You could try registering it on the casio website or contacting them on email. Assume if it's fake it won't be possible to register it? Or find some images of the same product online and compare them (especially the back if possible). It gives you a bit more back up to your feeling that it's fake.

How did you pay for it? If it was by credit card I think you're insured? Definitely report them to Amazon though.

Well, a £40 Casio is hardly a heirloom! Does it go? Is it £20-worth of watch?

exaltedwombat · 11/09/2012 17:23

And, to be blunt, if you don't have £30 to waste, why were you buying this anyway?

Machadaynu · 11/09/2012 17:25

They are legally obliged to refund your initial £8 shipping if you return it.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/09/2012 17:31

Are you sure it's a fake, and not just a bit shoddier than you'd expected? Casio is a value brand rather than premium, so some of their watches do have a cheap look and feel. Can you have a look at one in a shop to see how it compares to yours?

That only applies if the item costs over £100.

This happened to me when I bought an ergo sling on ebay. The seller did give me a full refund (including postage and cost of returning it), but ebay have a policy about resolving disputes if the seller doesn't agree to refund. They take these things seriously as it could damage their reputation so much. I found information online (ergo website and elsewhere) to confirm that it was fake, though I'd loaned a real one so I knew it was very different.
