named driver no claims car insurance - possible to transfer NCB?

I'm looking for an insurance company who will take into account 9 years of No claims bonus , but only as a named driver. I'm recently separated and for all the 18 years we were together I was the named driver. I'm told that as I was only named driver, I cannot transfer any of the 'no claims bonus' so I am told I have to start from scratch with 0 years, resulting in huge quotes. Can anyone help? Many thanks for any suggestions.

I don't think you have a No Claims Bonus if you were only a named driver. I didn't until we got a second car and I became the main driver on that car, specifically so I could build up a No Claims Bonus of my own.

You could point out to insurers that you've never made a claim (if you haven't) and how long you've been driving for. Probably best to speak to someone rather than do an online quotation though.

Have you tried the company you're currently a named driver with? Tesco gave DD a discount when she started driving her own car after being a named driver on my policy for a couple of years (but ultimately she went with Diamond as they were cheapest)

Hi I had a similar problem for different reasons. You get an allowance called 'driving experience' which they equated to a no claims - similar discount.

Driving experience is for those who were named drivers but not policy holders. It can be limited to a certain number of years.

The best company for me were axa, but its worth ringing round.

Direct line did for DH, but that was because he was named driver on my policy with them. Probably had been for 16 years.

Thanks for your responses - I'm trying now with the insurance company that we were with previously, but not holding my breath.

I can't help thinking this will affect women disproportionately to men, and therefore might be discriminatory?

Why will it effect women disproportionately? Whoever is the main driver should be the main driver on the policy. If that is the man, then he will drive the car more than the woman so proportionately has higher number of hours driving without an accident. As simply a named driver, you may have only taken the car out once a month so why should you benefit from the same level of no claims? I am main driver on our policy, as I drive far more than DH.

There are some companies that will do this. I think Admiral are one. It happened to my dsis
