Sorry to be vulgar but what would you ask for?

Hi,

I hate talking about detailed money issues in real life as I was brought up to believe it was vulgar- that's why I thought I'd try MN :)

My partner and I live together with my young DS. I get maintanance which is adequate and probably slightly more than CSA would allocate. My partner works in a pretty low paid job (about 1000-1100 per month after tax). I earn more than twice as much but have ridiculous debts which I can only blame myself for. I have a large mortgage - £850 per month as I was landed with the 'family' home when my ExH left. I tried to sell but no luck in 4 years :( . Anyway, with the mortgage, council tax, gas and electric, sky (luxury I know!), TV lic, insurances, water.....what do you think is a reasonable amount for my partner to contribute monthly???
Due to his wage, I know I should and will pay more but this is his home now too. We have been together for 2 years.

Thanks for any help!

Pool your finances and each have the same "free" spending money each after all bills, food etc?

Put the same percentage of your take home pay into a joint account. Pay all household bills including mortgage out of it.

If you did that, you'd have to decide if you counted your maintenance under "take home pay" and your debts as household bills.

We contribute a percentage to the joint bills equivalent to the percentage of our individual salaries vrs total income...e.g. my salary equates to 60% of overall income therefore I pay 60% of the joint bills...make sense?

Thanks for the ideas folks. Much appreciated....:)
