PPI - are any of the claim companies any good?

Sorry, this is the most boring thread ever! DH and I have two credit cards and a loan that we have paid payment protection insurance on for several years. I think we might have a case for reclaiming it for mis-selling and tbh we could really do with the money at the moment.

However, all the products were with Egg and have transferred to various other providers. I don't have many details of the accounts and wouldn't know where to send the claims to seeing that the debts have since been sold on to various other companies. Realistically although I've been meaning/wanting to sort this out for ages I haven't and don't think I will be able to on my own.

Therefore I was thinking of getting a PPI claims company to look into it. I know we won't get as much back but I can't see us getting anything if left to our own devices! Has anyone used one of these and can recommend or un-recommend them?

Thanks Smile

Before going to one of these companies please look on the money saving expert forums.

There is bound to be someone who can help there.

I wouldn't want to part with 40% of whatever i was entitled to.

pushmepullyou · 07/08/2012 22:36

I hadn't realised it was quite as high as that Shock

The problem is that I don't know either my card/loan numbers (does this show up on a credit report) and I certainly don't know my payment protection insurance account number, so I'm not sure what to do next

Definitely go to Moneysavingexpert.

He has templates of letters that you can send to the companies. I'm sure you don't need to know all the ins and outs.

MikeLitorisRings · 07/08/2012 22:40

I didn't know mine when I claimed. I did know who the loan was with though.

They aren't all 40% but they do all charge for what is essentially filling in a form.

Iirc there is a section on MSE with info on loans and cards from companies that are no longer in business.

Good luck with it.

CogitoErgOlympics · 07/08/2012 22:44

Use the MSE templates and fill in as much information as you have. The companies involved can look back through their records and a name and address is often all it takes. Credit reports will have more information. You've nothing to lose and I don't think paying a company to reclaim your PPI will produce better results.

All you need is to go to the Financial Ombudsman Service website

There's a questionnaire you can download and all the instructions you need to launch a claim.

Do NOT give any of your money to any of these charlatans, they don't have any relevant qualifications and are not even regulated. I could set myself up as one now, download the questionnaire, get you to fill it in, post it for you and charge whatever I like for the priviledge.

They will do nothing you couldn't do yourself.

OK, OK I'll give it a go Grin

I find things like this so stressful, son't know why really. if it was something I was dealing with at work I'd have it sorted out in no time!

Please don't use these companies. You can do it yourself. Fill in the form and send it recorded delivery. That is all I did and I got £4000 back.
