Anybody out there taken out life/critical illness insurance after actually having had a critical illness?

And if so who was the provider? A family member who had an organ transplant several years ago is trying to find a company who will provide them with affordable life insurance (and preferably critical illness cover too) so they can take out a mortgage. So far all the quotes they've had, which have been for life insurance only, were for ridiculous premiums - between £175 and £300 a month!

Thank you anybody who can help.

Hi Alexander, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but it's extremely unlikely your family member will be able to get life / CI cover at reasonable rates.

Underwriters will look at past medical history and rate (increase) the premiums for life cover because your family member is more likely to make a claim than someone of a similar age without the same medical history. Re CI cover, even if a life office was willing to offer cover, there would be so many exclusions attached to it, it simply wouldn't be worth having the cover.

Have they spoken to an IFA, maybe they will be able to point them in the right direction.

Hi there. My DH has had cancer twice. The first time was before we first bought a house, so when we got a mortgage, we did eventually get life insurance and critical illness cover - although anything associated with his cancer was specifically excluded. He was still only 25 at that point so the premiums were higher than they'd normally be (off the top of my head, around £80 per month) but not prohibitively so.

Then it came back in 2006 - and we moved house in 2009 (to a bigger house) and needed more cover to cover the extra mortgage. At that point, he couldn't get critical illness cover at all. He has the original policy, but we've topped it up with basic life insurance cover for the additional mortgage but it has anything to do with cancer excluded (with Norwich Union or Legal & General I think) and its another £80 a month I think. It would have gone up anyway (he was 33 at that point). So there are companies out there but I'm guessing he'll only get basic life insurance and there may be several exclusions.
