Can one still top up a state or NHS pension?

This is something I really ought to know but I don't. I am rapidly approaching an age where I need to seriously think about this! I have some big gaps in my NI contributions. I can't make sense of the govt website!

My private pension provision isn't very good in the UK (just 9 PT years of NHS, as a HCP, out a potential 28!); I do have 10 or so years of pension accrual overseas which was gained working FT.

Now, can I increase my pension contributions to the NHS? Can I 'invest' a lump sum? Can I do some 'catch up' on my state pension?

Any thoughts or links would be very helpful! Thanks.

Topping up NI contributions When and How to top up NI contribs

I'm pretty sure you can top up your NHS pension with additional voluntary contributions. My DM was a public sector worker and did exactly that in the last six or seven years of her career. Your union representative or line manager should be able to point you in the right direction.

I topped up my NHS pension contributions by buying loads of extra years. [I was given a promotion and I chucked as much as I could at the extra years so I wouldn't miss the money as I never saw it!]
I don't remember whether you could pay in a lump sum but I don't think you could or I would have bought them too. I may be wrong though!
I spoke to the payroll department about it, rather than the manager (known of his business!)or union though. I seem to remember a lot of it depended on how old I was when I applied to make the extra payments. If you are close to retirement age then get in ASAP!
