So we're on the same income as we have been for about three years, yet our TC's have gone down from £480 to £140 and they say we owe them nearly £5K! No explanation whatsoever, we have 2 dc's and are under £32K a year! Any ideas??

If you're on £32k with 2 DC's I didn't think you'd be entitled to any tax credits?

The earnings limit was reduced to £32k from about £43k this year, iirc

Honestly, could be lots of things. Change in jobs? Change in childcare? Chnage in hours? Has one of your DC's just turned one? Or it could be a mistake.

You need to phone them and ask them why they think on overpayment has happened and go from there. If you don't agree with the explanation, ask for a dispute form

Are either of you in a sales role? Or receive bonuses? I ask because I too have been stung with a £5k bill!

I'm not entitled to tax credits any more as I'm over £32k but still the overpayment back. Mine was due to sales bonus.

butisthismyname · 04/08/2012 17:44

I've just done the calculator and it comes up as even less than they say we are entitled to. It's so confusing and I'm not usually baffled by things like this!

I think you need to ring them tbh. The system is so bloody complicated, imo.

Lougle · 05/08/2012 07:42

If they are saying you owe them £5000 from just one tax year, then that's £12000 of income that they are counting, because the withdrawl rate is 41%.

How many hours do you each work?

butisthismyname · 05/08/2012 10:21

I work 30 dh works 16
