I am about to embark on selling a few bits and pieces on ebay. Have just put my first item on and it looks good, have had a bid already Grin
I have noticed that they warn you off comparing you're items to famous brands such as monsoon/next etc if its not the real thing. It says you're not allowed to refer to any brand in the title other than the brand the item actually is.It also says that if you do they will delete your item and you'll still have to pay fees, if you break this rule.
I am just wondering if this has happened to any of you?
I have been buying from ebay for a while and have seen 100's of adverts listing brand names that are not the brand of the item being sold.
Presumably to get more hits on searches, is this really such a big no-no?

Not worth it, I hate when I'm searching for something and get the other thing beacuse they've put the title in the headline. I nearly ended up with crappy hair straightners instead of some GHD ones as they had the cheek to put it in the text too . It was only "like GHD"
My DH agrees with me that we wouldn't buy it just on that principle!

It certainly irritates me, if I keep seeing Monsoon type dress, or Sony type whatever. I think it's fair anough to mention in the write up "this is just like a Monsoon/Sony xxx" but if I see it in the title, I tend to whizz right over the item without looking at it.

vickiyumyum · 05/03/2006 19:29

the ones i hate are 'and next we have....' so that if you are searching for next items that seems to come up a lot and also so monsoon/boden/gap (insert shop of your choice) and then you read the description and its primark!!!

i think some people manage to get away with it, not sure how, as when i first started out ebaying i listed a bundle of kids clothing as next, gap, boden, monsoon, which it was and my listing was removed!

dollydanderfluffofwillowbottom · 05/03/2006 19:36

i was selling a robot that was a bit ike robosapien so i put that down and it got deleted. however i had a bid on that and another item from the same buyer, and she emailed me to ask if i would still sell the robot so i did and didnt have to pay ebay fees Grin

was 1st time i did it and i dont think i would do it again, they didnt seem amused. dont know how so many people get away with it, doesnt seem fair to me Angry

Lucycat · 05/03/2006 19:42

erm yes guilty! Blush I got busted for using the word and got a polite email telling me that I'd been very naughty and they removed the whole listing and we had to redo it all again, you get no chance to change it, it just vanishes!

Still sold the item the next week though!! Grin

I've basically bought quite a lot in sales and charity shops. Some is bnwt and are monsoon and next etc.
But I've also got some new stuff from red herring, babbleboom, john rocha and jasper conran. I want to maxamise my reach so what do I put on it - any ideas?
Do people search on the word 'designer'?
Bit worried about the red herring and babbleboom stuff doesnt seem to be viewed as much as the other designers but the stuff is really gorgeous.
Are there any other expressions to use?

Some people do search on "designer". Make sure you put the age (eg 9-12 months)in the title, and what it is, i.e. dress, t-shirt, trousers etc. And if it is for boy/girl/unisex. Put at least one word in capitals.

SleepySuzy · 05/03/2006 21:16

Oh, and make sure your pics are clear, and reflect true colours. If item is light, picture it on a dark background. Make sure clothing is clean and ironed!!

tiswas · 05/03/2006 22:05

Thanks for all you comments - have been looking again on ebay - a lot of sellers put description and them 'not monsoon/gap etc is this acceptable do you know?

Anyone else got any experience of this?

Again, putting 'not Gap' is just as irritating as 'Gap style' or 'like Gap'. If I'm searching for an item, I often exclude items with the words like, style and not in the titles. I'd describe things as they are - eg 'Fab black slouchy ladies trousers size 12 Red Herring'.

tiswas · 06/03/2006 09:37

I'm probably being really dense here but what does boho acually mean, people seem to put it on everything?
I thought it was a phrase for trendy vintage maybe indie/gypsy style clothes - but have seen it put on things that I wouldnt regard as trendy at all, quite grannyish if i'm honest.
Do people search on this?

SoupDragon · 06/03/2006 09:38

team up. say, a babbleboom top with a Monsoon skirt. Can legitimately use Monsoon in the title then.

isn't babbleboom just debenhams own brand, not designer though?

tiswas · 06/03/2006 10:56

Thats a good idea, thanks. I thought babbleboom was a designer - shows how much I know.
Any ideas on boho?
