Car found embedded in wall (a bit long, sorry)

Well the car was stolen last week while at the local garage for an MOT. The Police rang tonight to say it had been found in a wall. That's all they could tell me, I've got to arrange to go and see it at a pound.

Having been in limbo since the car was stolen I've now got some insurance questions and wondered whether anybody could help.

My insurance basically advice me to claim from the garage (otherwise I would loose the excess and potentially loose no claims). How do I do this? or am I just being given the brush off?

What happens when I go to the pound - do I have to arrange to have it collected straight away or can it stay there while I sort out the insurance issues?

I know I can find out in the morning but I'd like to know now [stamps foot impatiently].

you should try to claim from the garage, yes. but you might not be able to - had they parked it on the street?

dunno about the pound thing. I imagine you can leave it there for a few days.

No it was parked off the road in front of the garage in a bay labelled MOT. I didn't explain that they first stole the key from the garage's office, then took the car. Some cheek.

But how do i claim - do I have to write to the garage and formalise things or do I ask for their insurance details and ring?

I think you will lose your no-claims unless you are paying for it to be protected - unless they have caught the people in question.

Don't know what claim from the garage means?

ooooooooooh I see

what a nightmare!

Have the garage admitted responsibility?

I'd give your insurance company the garages details, surely while your car was with them, they were responsible for it? They will have insurance and no doubt it will cost them more to renew it next time.

What type of insurance do you have?

Thanks for that mp.

As regards claiming from the garage - the car was in their 'safe keeping' as they had accepted the key and the booking - so they are reponsible for the loss (I think). My insurance said that it I claimed on mine - they would recover the money from the garage's insurance.

I've got fully comp with a high level of no claims - I'll loose some of that.

Tha garage haven't admitted responsibility but they have loaned me a car.

How can they not accept liability? They had the keys, I take it they can't produce the keys now!

With Fully Comp, you can get your car repaired and then your insurance company can claim it back from the garage. If you wait for the garage to pay up, it could be some time.

You could be right kid - although for the time being I do have one of their cars.

I just don't need this hastle - the thought of dealing with it making me panic. I think its time to find some wine!

Thanks all.

When my car was stolen and was in the "car pound" thing we were charged a small fortune for every day that it was there...

luckily my car was unhurt and we took it 'out' straight away. I know the insurance paid all the costs we had etc (minus excess obviously) but dont know how long they would have paid for if we "couldnt have been botehred" to remove it immediately IUSWIM
