random £100 in my bank account...

There is £100 in my bank account and I don't know where it came from. Its showing that it was paid in via a branch of my bank yesterday. I searched the sort code and its the branch just down the road from my house, which makes me believe it may not have been an error. Also, you don't need to give sort code/account number to pay in now you just stick your card in the machine dont you? Leaves less room for errors.

I am with Natwest, so it may be something to do with all the errors they have been having on balances etc. What should I do? Tried calling bank but hold time is about two hours.

Did you turn over a Community Chest card? :) Does it say anything other than 'credit' in the description? Contact the bank via letter or e-mail perhaps so that you can say you raised it as an issue, but then salt it away in a savings account, leave it alone and let them prove it's not yours.

StaceymReadyForNumber3 · 03/07/2012 10:30

If it bothers you write a letter but it's up to them to prove its not yours, and for £100 they prob won't bother tbh. Treat yourself :)

WelshCat · 03/07/2012 12:20

:) thanks for replying.

I dont want to end up having to pay it back if i spend it, but then I guess it is their mistake. I will hide it in my savings account for a month or so and if nobody has claimed ii I will spend it!

I just cant see how it could have happened by accident! But then I dont know anyone who would put 100 quid in my bank either!

Legally, unless there is good reason to suspect that it is yours (because you were expecting that amount from someone), it would be very hard to prove that you should keep it. I thought (from dim and distant banking law past) that there was some kind of ruling about duty of care re checking statements, but everything I have found points to you not being able to keep it.

Practically, I would do exactly what you have and put it out of sight in another account for some time to see what happens. (I am a bad person)

Morally, you should call the bank to ask where the payment came from - you never know, it could be genuine!

milkymocha · 03/07/2012 15:06

Agreed! Move it into your savings for a little bit Grin lucky you. Iam off to check my account!!!!

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2012 15:18

I think legally all you're obliged to do is tell the bank about the discrepancy. You're right, there have been cases where people wake up one morning, find a million quid in their account that they weren't expecting, go on a spree and end up in hot water making Sad faces in newspaper centre pages when the bank wants its money back. But if you have alerted the bank, made reasonable efforts to resolve the problem and they don't act, I think it's yours.

Are you with Nat West? Could it be compensation of some kind? I've actually got a nearly-dead account with them with £0.01 left in it. Maybe I should check. See if everyone's getting a ton.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2012 18:41

I checked. Still a penny. Confused Bastards.

crazynanna · 03/07/2012 18:46

Grin Cogito the fuckers'!"

CogitoErgoSometimes · 03/07/2012 21:42

Just the one lousy account and they haven't the decency to cock it up so that I can claim compensation. Why!? Why!!!?

Rockchick1984 · 03/07/2012 22:30

thesecondcoming was there anything else other than your NI number, that usually means its paid from the benefits people.

CSA will come up with your NI number, think once its a regular payment it'll have a few numbers, then NI then CSA, but first payments are sometimes a bit messy with references... Fingers crossed for you!!!

ahahaha TheSecondComing youre the first person I have seen to use the word cunt on a thread :p

If i could email the bank I would, but I'm not spending the best part of the £100 on hold to them to tell them they need to take £100 off me! I may just keep it in my savings account.
