Can you recommend a bank account for someone who has no regular income?

Hi, I am in the process of being made redundant so will soon have no income except what little I transfer from the joint a/c to mine for personal spending.

My problem is - my current account is one where you have to pay in over £1000 a month. So I need to change my bank account.

I have looked on moneysavingexpert and all the accounts recommended require a certain amount to be paid in each month.

Can anyone recommend an account where there is some interest paid (I have a little bit of my own money that I will also be keeping in it), but which doesn't require a regular amount to be paid in?

Many thanks!

What happens with your current account if you don't pay in £1000? Is there a penalty or do you simply lose out on some benefit or other. Something you can also consider if you're organised is transferring £1000 out of your joint a/c each month and transferring the excess back again. My retired parents do this so that they can each benefit from the Halifax monthly fiver :)

I had wondered if you could do that Cogito, I thought it had to be income from emplioyer not from joint account or DH! Does the money have to be in the account for a certain length of time? Or could I arrange for £1000 to go in each month say, then £900 to go back out next day?

With the account I have now I get no interest at all if minimum £1000 not paid in (I assumed from an employer).

Sorry if I am being really dim, but if I apply for the Halifax account won't they ask me who my employer is? And when I say not employed won't they just reject me?

Otherwise it would work, DH could tf his income (minus his allowance) to me, and I could then tf it to joint account (minus my allowance) each month.

I am getting Confused just thinking about it...

I had this problem when I stopped working. My bank starting charging me as I wasn't crediting the account regularly. So I now have an instant-access savings account with Natwest (think it's called e-savings). I can't remember what the interest rate is, but obviously it won't be that great as it's instant access. But you get a debit card like with a normal current account, and online access. HTH.
