Tax Credit Review Letter

VodkaKnockers · 23/06/2012 13:15

Hopefully some can help me understand this.

Today, I received a letter from the B&C Compliance department stating that my claim has been selected for review and has requested that send quite a lot of documentation to them.

I tried to call them to get further information as to why my claim has been reviewed but unfortunately the line is closed until Monday morning.

Has anyone else received this letter or could shed some light on it?

thanks

I've got one too, I think it's part of a massive exercise, under the guise of a 'random review' to weed out excessive claims for childcare. I've been claiming tax credits for over 7 years and this is the 1st I've had a review. I think you just have to give them what they ask for and hope that is enough.

I'm just worried that they are going to stop my payments

Vodka I am too, I'm worried sick that they'll turn round and tell me I don't need all the childcare I use (I have a very flexible job, and need to pay for the space my DD uses, not the actual number of hours I use IYSWIM). I'm using this weekend as a chance to try and find all my receipts and bank statements to show what I've paid. If I lose the tax credits I have just now, I'll not be able to work as I don't have £400 p/m to pay for childcare that I currently need. It's a catch 22, and I'm just hoping praying that they'll accept what I'm able to send and then leave me alone.

I've just called the general helpline who couldn't give me any information.

All thy did say was that if I didn't response, my claim would terminated as of April this year.

I just want to if there is an issue with my claim or if his is just a random check.

I had this last year. They just want to check you are paying what you are claiming. Mine was a few weeks of worry but all sorted and no issues - just a letter saying they were satisfied with my childcare costs etc

smokinaces · 23/06/2012 14:02

And it does seem random, mine was first time in six years last year.

Part of me is waiting for this years letter though.....

CogitoErgoSometimes · 23/06/2012 15:52

I think they have to do these checks because quite a lot of claims just go through on the bounce, continuing to use last year's information rather than supplying new numbers. It's the equivalent of the gas company reading the meter every so often rather than using customer estimates. As long as you can back up your claim with things like payslips. there shouldn't be a problem

I had one full one & then a year later one asking for my childcare receipts. The first took a while to sort out due to not working the same number of hours weekly BUT it was sorted & there was an overpayment which they are taking back from my tax credits now.

BigFatCushion · 23/06/2012 17:08

I had a review last year too. It was fine :)

Ruralgeek · 26/06/2012 21:15

I've been reviewed for the fifth year running this year! You'd think after checking us for 4 years they'd be satisfied that we were claiming correctly but no such luck :( I've checked the figures for childcare and we're within £10.00 of what we've claimed so that's ok, our annual income is likely to be lower than stated as my husband is self-employed and has made a loss. They're wasting their money on this exercise and I wonder why they don't use their efforts in dealing with their 30 year backlog of tax tribunals instead of harrassing hard working tax payers! They even killed me off a few months ago so I've had a really bad year with them.

Mine was reviewed too for the first time in 7 years think they are obviously clamping down a lot.

We got one and I called the London Number on the letter and the very nice man sorted it out over the phone with just a few questions. He said there was no need to send in all the documentation askes in the letter ( a list as long as your arm) and that he felt our claim was genuine and HMRC were being 'over zealous' He even sorted out the mess that the 0845 helpline had caused by overstating our income by £20000 in the first place1 this resulted in aletter demanding a £3000 repayment when no money was owed
