CSA question.

DS pays child maintenance to his ex for his DS via the CSA. (He was paying voluntarily but she thought she'd get more, she was wrong.) He has a minimum wage, part-time job so the sums involved are not large.

He will be starting a new college course later this year, but will be keeping his pt job; shifts can be arranged around his college hours but he'll probably work fewer hours. It seems from the CSA website that students are nil-rated for maintenance, and it seems "wrong" that he'll still be earning (albeit not a lot) but not expected to pay anything, even the £5 pw the unemployed are expected to pay.

Is this true?

(He'll pay something anyway.)

I think they may still ask for proof of his wages in order to make an assessment After all they deduct from the NRP benefit which is some 70 quid per week

Yep it is

Putthatbookdown, I think they stopped taking child maintenance from "other benefits" quite some time ago.

I am confused that my ds can be assessed as owing x amount as a part-time worker in a minimum-wage job, but keep that job ( with altered shifts, and probably fewer hours) and become a student, and he owes nothing! (And he will continue to contribute, as said before.)
