the law & photographing children

I am desperately looking for information about the actual law (rather than good practice) and am coming up with very little (other than dodgy looking sites). In my work we have 'good practice' & 'policy' but what is the law?
Can someone signpost me to a site?
Don't want to go into the details but would like to know the actual law in order to help a friend protect her children.

There was one thread about that (with a link to it) a couple of days ago.

Here is a PDF setting out the law, I think. The document looks a bit heavy, but I can help give you more info if you can share more details of the problem.

NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2006 10:53

Ha, both that thread, and my post, linked to the same site.

HIO NQC, how are you doing?

NotQuiteCockney · 24/02/2006 10:57

I'm ok. Well, a bit depressed I think, but ok.

Busy with house stuff and so on, which helps.

My dad is now talking about marrying my fairy godmother, so that his pension won't be wasted. Er, ok.

thanks guys, that pdf is helpful.
I am surprised that there doesn't seem to be a law that relates to children as schools etc have very strong guidelines etc.

Talking to people, even people who work with children, there seems to be an understanding that there is a law relating to this but I can't find any evidence of it.

Well, I think schools can, and do, have their own rules, as they are private property (I think?).

But the concern about children being photographed is pretty recent, and the law hasn't really caught up with public opinion on this one. From what I know, child porn wasn't illegal until the 70s, so you can see how not-concerned people used to be!

I take your point about schools and private property NQC.
I have mixed feelings about this myself.

I'm not convinced we need special laws (above and beyond child porn laws, that is) and think we've (as a society) become really really weird about kids.

NotQuiteCockney, I have posted more in your travel thread. Hope things feel a bit more bearable soon. hugs
