My grandson is staying with me until he goes to uni in September. He is if course trying to find a job to see him the the summer. He reckons that because he's registered to go to uni ( A-Level results dependent) he can't claim any sort of benefit until he goes. Does anyone know if this is right? Of course if he's lucky enough to get a job he won't need to make a claim. Just how is he supposed to live otherwise?

Bumping thread up for you

Is anyone still claiming child benefit / tax credits for your grandson? You can have these up to the age of 19 in full time education.

No, I don't think so.

Is he available for work? If he is he may get JSA (the income based type). Worth an enquiry at Jobcentre.

The Turn2Us benefits checker isn't appropriate for full-time students but they offer an Advicefinder option which he may find useful. I'm sure he'll be able to get a temporary job over the holidays.

He should apply for JSA, the DWP will decide if he's eligible or not.

The application can be completed online via directgov website, tell him to do it today

If no-one is getting CB/CTC for him, then he should be able to sign on if he is 18. The offer of a uni place is only provisional dependent on results.

He should apply online as soon as he has finished college and see what they say. You should check if his parents are getting CB etc though - if they are you could get it transfered to you.
