Can I urge you to try price comparison websites?

I have always been a bit lazy about shopping around for better deals.
However, recently we got our car insurance renewal notice through and were Shock to find it quoted at £1800. We are both 40+, no teen driver yet, good no claims.... So looked on price comparison site and we had quotes around the £500 mark, from reputable companies.
So rang insurer and told them and they said they could renew for £700 ish. Asked why we had been quoted £1800 and they couldn't say Hmm

Yesterday got contents insurance renewal notice. Little over £500. So on a roll I thought I'd see if we could do better. Got it for about £150 (again a reputable company with good reviews)

So feeling very chuffed at saving so much but really annoyed that we were quoted so much in first place.
And it really isn't so time consuming to get quotes online. Do it Smile

I found this out the hard way about 10 years ago myself.

When I tried to cancel my insurance suddenly they reduced it by mega bucks. When I asked them why the lovely lady on the phone said she shouldn't say this but people who don't shop around are their 'bread and butter' customers; just accepting that they are always getting a good deal.

Since then I've never been able to beat my car renewal, so maybe a box got ticked on my form saying I couldn't be screwed over any more.

I think that's right about people who just renew without looking being bread and butter customers. If we had been quoted £700 to start with for the car renewal we would probably have gone with it. As it is, they lost our custom.

Isn't that one of the (now extremely wealthy) Martin Lewis' stock statements? If you've never changed utility supplier, changing to any of them will save you money. There are no rewards for loyalty.

Completely agree - just changed our home insurance supplier and saved £900 in the process. Definitely worth spending half an hour on the internet to shop around. Annoyed I didn't do this before!

Just tell your current insurer you have a better deal elsewhere- they are allowed to improve the offer over the phone. Car insurance renewed a week or so ago. Renewal quote was £625. Other company quote on net said £605. We got it for £560.

DW said their is an iPhone app for scanning bar codes when you are out shopping to find item cheaper with x mile radius. Would recommend using it on baled beans though Smile

Definately agree with using the price comparison websites. We were recently quoted £1500 for our car, and when I used price comparison got it down to just under £500.

Someone recently recommended Quidco to me as well. So far it is tracking £128 back for me.
