Applying for a crisis loan.

Hi. Sorry, I've name changed as I'm Blush

I'm due to move house in less then 2 weeks and have been dropped in it as my current landlord won't refund my deposit and extra month's rent (about 1k) that they have been paid until after I move out at least because she's going on holiday when I move out. I need this to pay for the rent in the new house before I move in. I also have moving costs which I can't cover now. There's no other way I can get the funds so I thought about applying for a crisis loan to cover this. I'm self employed but get child tax credit and working tax credit and will be able to repay it once I get the money back from the current landlord. How long does it usually take? This is the first one I've applied for.

Thank you.

They are really tight with them. I know how hard being in a place you hate can be. You might be able to talk to your local council. But I would say ask citizens advice.

NettoSuperstar · 27/05/2012 21:30

They don't ask about insurance.
I understand you not wanting to lie, but it's a means to an end when you need it, and it is paid back.

I've already complained to the council, they sent me a diary to fill in but the neighbours were quiet for most of the time that I had it. There's other reasons for the move, I can't say as they will out me. The council here pay 4 weeks in arrears so I'm 4 weeks ahead with my rent as I pay them at the start of the month, not the end. My current LL has to write a letter saying that I'm not in arrears so the council will pay me the 4 weeks of arrears, but the lady from the council has said that it takes them 2 weeks to process it. If I were to get a letter ASAP I could possibly manage to pay my rent on time. There's also the deposit that I need to get back. Clear as mud? Confused I think this is right.

so they will pay at the end of the month rent for the month just gone - i.e. that has already been paid? It takes two weeks to process? Is that after they get the letter or after the date the money would normally be paid?

If you could get the letter from teh landlady the same day as the last months rent goes into her account (so she knows without doubt you can't go into arrears) that would give you four weeks to get the payment before you would have to pay the new landlord wouldn't it? If the council would release the money two weeks from getting the letter to say no arrears then you could use that couldn't you? Or am I missing a crucial point? (I suspect I probably am, it couldn't be that easy when council payments are involved could it?)

LowRegNumber · 28/05/2012 01:47

That doesn't sort out the deposit obviously but could you use that months rent as your new deposit and apply for a crisis loan for the rent in advance or something? Then you could pay that back when you get the money back from your current landlady?

Yes. Councils pay 4 weeks in arrears. When I first applied last year it was backdated by a few months, and the LL took the 4 weeks arrears off the amount that she was sent, so the rent was up to date. The 4 weeks in arrears which the council pay is technically mine as it's already been paid to the LL.

The council have said that there's a backlog, so if I take the letter in saying I'm not in arrears it will take them 2 weeks to process it. The LL is due to get a 1 week payment this week (which is OK), and a 4 week payment in 4 weeks time (if I were to stay). I've left a message and asked for her to call me back, but she's already said she'll do a letter; she just hasn't done it yet.

I move next week, not in 4 weeks time. I have to pay the new LL next week. The deposit isn't a lot, he said it was more of a holding deposit, which is pointless now as I'm moving in next week. I had thought of asking the new LL if I can pay weekly until the council + old LL pay me.

I hope this makes sense, thank you Wine Smile

Ah now it makes more sense, I had totally assumed that you had four weeks, heaven knows why though!

Hope you have/are managing to get something sorted out with crisis loan and the landlords. Moving is such a nightmare but it does sound like it will be worth it if you can ditch the nuisance neighbours!

It might be worth giving Shelter a ring for advice. They don't just deal with homelessness.

I come into contact with them through a volunteer role and I've found them to be really helpful.

Zicoson crisis loans ceased to exist in 2013. You need to speak to your local council. This thread is over four years old.
