Hypothetical Question

If I am left with £750 a month to live on after bills, and debts are paid, would I be entitled to housing benefit/wtc. I have one dependent child.

Thanks in advance

£750/month after regular outgoings have been met sounds reasonably healthy for a household of 2. The best way to work out what state help you're entitled to is to run your income and other details through a resource like the Turn2Us Benefits Checker. Housing Benefit rules are determined by your local authority. You mention debts and they are not taken into account when calculating your entitlement. If your debts are excessive and you are struggling to pay them off then you could get some help from free debt advisory services such as CAB, CCCS and National Debtline.

Doubt if you would, unless you have basically no outgoings. We have a lot less than £750 a month once mortgage and direct debits have gone out, and aren't eligible for WTC (think we would get about £20 a month HB if we rented). It's based on your gross income, not what you have left after bills.

Thanks for that. Looks like I am stuck!

If you give a bit more detail you may get more advice, what is your gross annual income, how much is your rent and what are the other expenses you have each month?
