Time scales for Tax Rebate?

Goolash · 08/05/2012 17:41

I don't suppose anyone knows what the time scales are for getting a tax rebate for last year? I was on a BR tax code for some temping work. My tax situation is pretty straight forward.

The gov website seems to indicate you have to get documentation together and then call. You call and they tell you not to do anything as its done automatically.

There is no information on the website about time scales and I'm bored rigid of waiting on the phone for someone to deal with my call. I don't believe that there are ANY people to take your call once you go for the system and indicate you want a refund ;) I suppose if I did get through to someone they'd give me a how long is a piece of string answer anyway.

I received my P60 2 weeks ago. Are we talking weeks, a couple of months, or many months. I want my £1000 !!!

When you say 'get the documentation together' do you mean you downloaded and completed a claim form for the overpaid tax?

Sorry, I meant there are all the relevant P45s and P60 to hand :) I was looking at this page www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/overpaid-thro-job.htm#2
which isn't very helpful. It just has the link to contact HRMC and gives a number.

I have have recently asked for my P45, as it was the easiest way for the agency to give me my holiday pay. I may be working for them again next week! Or it could be a month.

Do you think I should do this?

"You can claim a tax refund by filling in form P50 Claiming tax back when you have stopped working. Send this to HMRC, together with form P45, Parts 2 and 3 - and keep Part 1A for your own records."

That's on www.hmrc.gov.uk/incometax/stop-work-refund.htm

My last job finished about 5 weeks ago and I'm not claiming any benefits or registered as unemployed.

Any help would be good.

It took me about 2 weeks to get a letter saying they were sending me money and then I got the money another 2 weeks after that.
I'd been told it could take up to 12 weeks if they were busy.

Yes, claim for a refund.

P50 is not going to help you - that is for claiming back tax deducted in the year that you stop working (ie the date of your P45). But it will NOT sort itself out because we have started a new tax year.

This is probably down to laziness on the part of the agency in not processing your P45 or P46 properly when you started.

Call the number here with your P60 in your hand (and your P45 for any other jobs in 2011/12) and you should get sorted.

WowOoo how did you claim for your refund?

I had to fill in some forms. Can't remember what forms sorry.
Hope you get it sorted soon.
It's really hard getting through to them, let alone getting the answers you want.

smallgingerone · 09/05/2012 20:49

You need an R40 form. I am rubbish at links but try this

Fill it in send it back and I normally have had to wait 6-8 weeks or so for a rebate.

WOW! I actually got through to the helpline!!!!!

I'll get my tax code sorted out and they'll send me a calculation through in the next 10 days. It seems a bit silly to have to go through a helpline, the questions I answered could easily have been dealt with through an online form.

Thanks for you the help :)

my husband in the same situation with the tax office, spoke to them today to claim whats been overpaid. I just wondered if you'd received your calculation and cheque and if so how long it all actually took. :)
