I think it's supposed to have gone in early because of the bank holiday but mine hasn't so I'm worried! Tried to call them and it says they can't take my call...

Nope but I've had a letter, we've overpaid you by £4k and we want it by the start of June.

Yeah no problem, do you want cash?

perceptionreality · 05/05/2012 09:27

Ah no Ambi :( I thought they had to take 10% from current award to cover overpayments? Mine went in today. I always worry about a cock up with them because if anything goes wrong it really does go wrong so it seems...

same here, I got an overpayment letter yesterday, i knew i had a £5400 overpayment which was discovered in June 2010 when I renewed but as I was still eligible for credits they would deduct from future payments now I am not eligible for them due to revised salary amounts. aahhh, I have until 6 June to pay, to be honest I knew it was wrong as my payments went from £56 a month to £410 a month last tax year, I call them 4 times to ask them to recheck but kept saying it was correct, luckily I saved most of the money as I knew one day it would come back to haunt me.

Also got another letter today to say that we are not eligible for 2012/3 credits, thought it was going to be another IOU letter ....

We got 10 letters in the post last week!
We have an overpayment of £6700 dating back from 2005 which I thought had been all sorted.
I paid it off yesterday but it is annoying thinking things have been sorted and then they are not!

It depends on your payment dates. If it goes into your account on Tuesdays then it may go in early due to the bank holiday. Mine goes in on Thursdays so won't go in early.

I owe them some money also, they send me letters saying I don't need to pay it back yet. Confused

ladybirdpoppy · 05/05/2012 14:24

just out of interest how they can come back to ask for more money from 2005, as you give them updated information each tax year, I had a statement from last June stating the amount I owe and it matches the letter received.

i have just been reading about overpayments, can you spread your payments more than 12 months as I can manage with 24 months without breaking the bank each month, OH is self employed and does not have regular monthly wage so to do it 12 months is a push.

2005 Shock nightmare!

I was 'checked' last year. Horrible, but came out OK.

Ambi · 05/05/2012 22:24

We're paying it back over 36 months, the maximum time allowed. I'll be reclaiming later in the year so they'll be paying me whilst I pay them back. Confused

TequilaMockinBird · 05/05/2012 22:31

I had a letter saying they'd overpaid me by £5k and that im not entitled any more so had 30 days to pay.

I rang them and I'm paying it back over 5 years. I hate the tax credit system!

I dread those "brown HMRC" envelopes, my OH is self employed so we are use to the tax system. About 7 years ago, my OH received a letter to say that HMRC had a new computer system and was rechecking all tax returns, he received a tax rebate of £1500 about 2 years prior to this and we ended up paying it back with interest as we tried to dispute it, even though his tax returns was done by an accountant too. So glad we were only in the tax credit system for 3 years ..... if I can pay back over 3 years that would be ok, its weird as what they are paying me in child benefit they could simply stop it for the next 5 years to pay off the overpayment.
