Tax rebate whilst on maternity

I've been paid over £1000 more than I was expecting. At first I thought it must have been my bonus (which I wasn't expecting) but this morning it's occurred to me that it's a new financial year and it could be a tax rebate? I went on maternity in August but only started getting SMP in November because of holiday pay and a slightly enhanced maternity package.

I thought you had to claim the tax back, do they do it automatically on PAYE?

I can't check with my accounts department til tuesdayand just curious x

I've never had that large a tax rebate via my PAYE and have always had to actively claim it back through my self-assessment form. The exception is when HMRC have adjusted my tax-code to correct a minor over or underpayment.... but that is always for smaller amounts of money and it's spread out over the year.

That's what I thought.... Maybe it was a bonus...

Thanks

Nice puzzle to have :)

I've had pretty large two rebates both last year and this year. Both completely unexpected, but very welcome! This year, it seems they've had my tax code wrong since 2006!

I mean, one rebate last year and one rebate this year.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 28/04/2012 13:07

Via your PAYE Littlefish or in the form of a cheque from HMRC?

I got about £100 per month back in each pay packet last tax year where I didn't earn anything. I didn't have to apply for it. Don't know if payrole had anything to do with it, or if it was automatic tho. £1000 sounds like a lot of tax tho, but I guess if you are a big earner, its possible.

poorbuthappy · 28/04/2012 13:23

It can be done via PAYE.

Littlefish · 28/04/2012 16:42

A cheque came in the following post, both times Cogito.

I'm not a big earner - unfortunately!

PAYE works a year at a time, starting in April, so you can't get a lump sum refund of tax in April for the previous year through PAYE, it would be spread over the whole of 2012/13.

When do you usually get your payslip?
