I had a barclays loan about 2 years ago now for £6000. Anyway a few mths ago I was really struggling to pay it and I rang them for help.

They offered me a resolve loan which would pay this loan off and my overdraft too. It was £104 over 9 years. I knew I was being ripped of but this was £50 a month cheaper than before and so I felt I had no choice.

Anyway, now me and dp have split up and £100 is going to be a struggle. My mom thinks they will reduce the payments if I ask but i'm not sure, i mean i only just arranged it, and sureyl they can't spread it over and longer period of time can they ??

I know i should just ring them, but thought i'd ask here first.

Can't hurt to try. Is the loan in your name or joint names?

nutcracker · 09/02/2006 16:39

No just my name (hi by the way)

did you take out any cover with it against unemployment etc?

nutcracker · 09/02/2006 16:41

No i wasn't allowed to because I wasn't working.

I think that they tend to feel that getting something back is better than nothing - its worth asking them. My DH used to work for a major bank in debt collectoin and said that as long as something was being repaid (even less than half arranged amount) they were happy.

nutcracker · 09/02/2006 16:43

I would be more than happy to pay half but i really can't see them going for it.

I will have to ring them because it is due to go out next week, and although the money will be in there it is going to leave me with no money for the week at all.

Agree with MamaG. If you haven't got it then they can't have it. As simple as that. You need to try and come to some kind of arrangement with them first though (which I'm sure you know) My mother had dealings with Barclays in the past over loans and didn't like the way they handled it so I would warn you to be prepared for a battle but don't give up!

They might try to charge you for the privilege but probably would add that to the outstanding balance. I guess you can but ask. Maybe they'd do interest only for a while but that won't solve the problem long term. I suppose you already realise that is over 11k in addition to whatever you'd already paid towards 6k + od Is it worth visiting CAB first to assess your overall situation before you ask, in case they can suggest a different way to manage it.

nutcracker · 09/02/2006 16:47

Oh yeah LIZ i knew i was getting ripped off but at the time I had no other choice as I couldn't get a loan anywhere else to pay them off iykwim.
