Bloody tax credits

Are saying we owe £3438 because they have recorded my income twice, put me down as employed and self-employed with the same figure. Saying our income is nearly £40K instead of £24K makes a big difference. Annoying thing is they can't change it on their system cos the tax year has ended so I have to wait for renewal pack and spend a few weeks worrying about it. We won't have to repay will we?

I'm not an expert but I can imagine you will have to pay it back!

wishiwasonholiday · 12/04/2012 15:50

How do you owe them money if they thought you earned £16000 more thank you actually did?! Surely they owe you money??

Did they pay based on the correct figure but now have you down as earning double for last year so think you have been overpaid ? Presumably if you can prove the lower figure (such as with a P11D) it will self adjust on their system so you owe nothing again.

My income from employmnet is about £15000, they have recorded me for £15K as employment and £15K for self-employment by mistake. I have never been SE. Therefore they hae overstated our income by £15K ish. I am sure once they realise their error it will be corrected. All I did was ring up to tell them the exact figures, how could they make such a cock-up? If I had earned £30000 I wouldn't need tax credits would I?

I had a chuckle at 'how an they make such a cock-up' all I need say is 'because they are HMRC' they are very frustrating and mostly unhelpful IME. Some of it is down to constraints of their system but still....

HappyMummyOfOne · 12/04/2012 19:12

If your award notice had the error on then they wont write off the overpayment as the emphasis is on the claimer to ensure its correct.

If you are still entitled to some amount of tax credits they will stop paying you until the overpayment is cleared, if you are no longer entitled then they will ask for the overpayment back.

QED · 12/04/2012 19:14

What did your award notice for 2011/12 say?

Glenshee · 13/04/2012 12:32

I second wishiwasonholiday - surely if they recorded your income twice then they didn't pay you enough, rather than the other way around?

lynnh28 · 13/04/2012 22:31

i would suggest u seek help with this as i would imagine they owe you money, not the other way around. if they have you down as earning nearly 40k and u dont i think you probably haven't received as much as you should. im not sure where you live but my local council have a WELFARE RIGHTS service, this is a free service and they help you with benefits etc. if you go on your local council webite and type it in the search bar it should give you a contact number if they do have this service. if you can't find it contact your local Surestart or Children's centre as they will more than likely have someone who can help.
