Christians Against Poverty: any experience?

CAP is a debt counselling charity. We put a debt in their hands after going to one their courses at a local church. Much impressed by the course and CAP's promise to take the weight off shoulders ... However, we find ourselves with a case worker who doesn't reply to emails or letters, who, very seriously, made an error of judgement with a variation order (offered £1.00 a month - as the judge said, it would take nearly 200 years to pay that off ...) and, maybe worst of all, has stalled on negotiations with the creditor meaning that, contrary to all the CAP assurances, bailiffs are turning up on the door step.

Have tried to get another case worker but seem unlucky in this. Have set up an account in CAP's favour - as they requested - but the money is going nowhere (except into CAP's hands) because of their damn stupid offer which has, of course, been rejected by the court.

Has anyone had experience of being a CAP client or can advise on an alternative? Thanks.

You need to get some alternative advice and quickly sounds like CAP are not acting in your best interests! look at Payplan or cccs who should beable to help you.

Who are the baliffs acting on behalf of? you can get the order suspended by using the N245 to the court - you can find some information here www.payplan.com/debt-library/court-orders-county-court-judgments.php but you will need to make an alternative offer to pay and £1 just will not suffice.

How much are you paying CAP every month?

Are you dealing with CAP via one of their church centres or directly with headoffice?

If it's a local centre I think you need to contact Headoffice - CAP are usually fantastic.

I can help you contact HQ if you like - pm me if I can help.

Agree with cwtch CAP are usually a brilliant charity. Sounds like a local issue, get involved with the head office ASAP, they will help.

Again, get in touch with Bradford office. Unclear if case worker is local centre manager ( who will not be as experienced or trained as head office), head office should be able to sort you out if you ask to change worker also. CAP are prescriptive, but usually work well.
