hi ya, wont be able to help much here im afraid. we had a scare of redundancies at our school sept last year and was told if enough people did vol redundancies thatd mean they wouldnt have to choose.

it was bloody awful, people who'd been there a long time took redundancy and got nice paypacket and we got to keep our jobs. i do feel for you, because for 8 weeks i didnt know if id still have a job or not.

none of us had signed contracts, and there was loadsa visits from the union man who was fantastic even though half of us dont belong to a union.

if we had been made redundant we would have been given only a months notice if i remember rightly, the ones who chose vol redundancy had to stay for 12weeks and they hated it

oops

NannyL · 04/02/2006 22:34

ok well byt law they have to give you a weeks notice per week you have been there

if you have been there for more than 2 years you also get a weeks pay for every year you have been there, ie been there for 3 years you are entitled to 3 weeks pay as redundancy pay (up to a maximum of 12 years) (if been working for less than 2 years, no entitlement to reduncancy pay tho)

these are the statory minimum requirements. Lets hope for the best and that you company is even more generouse!

Good luck!

Well I've just been told I'm going to be made redundant by end of March as that's when my contract is going to be finished anyway. But I'm having to go through a consolltaion (sp?) period, and a guy I know is going through the same. I'm not sure if it works the same for you if your contract has ended now but theyre suppose go through doing that from what I understand.

But I've just read what NannyL has posted, which is very useful for me to know. Hope it's not bad news for you, and good luck.

Tabs · 04/02/2006 23:25

Just to correct NannyL, I think she means a week's notice for every year that you've been there, not every week.

The week's salary for each year is also capped at £250 (that was limit about 3 years ago - may have risen slightly since) as a statutory amount, but many companies will top this up to your actual week's salary.

Also check what your normal notice period is (normally same as you would have to give them), as this would apply as a minimum notice here too.

mazzystar · 04/02/2006 23:36

sorry to hear that, how stressful.

there may be some helpful info on the ACAS site acas

are you in a union?

even if not Unison might be able to help you

NannyL · 05/02/2006 09:34

oops yes it IS (obviously) a weeks notice for every year (not week!!!!)

notasheep · 05/02/2006 09:38

I was up in the night with the worry!
Thanks for all your advice-So Ill get months notice and 3 weeks redundancy pay.
Contract ends at March so i am guessing thats how long i have got.

The most annoying thing is that i know i will NOT be entitiled to Job Seekers Allowance as they take dps student loan as income!!!

How on earth student loan is income i dont know?!

You may get contributions based job seekers allowance. It doesn't take household income into account but is based on your national insurance contributions. Worth speaking to the job centre about it.

HellyBelly · 07/02/2006 11:28

If you've worked and paid NI solidly for 2 years+ you definitley should get something! Nothing to do with dp's income, as long as you don't have big savings, you should be fine! Good luck

notasheep · 07/02/2006 15:01

So things arent quite so bad then, thankyou all for advice.

The Department i am in pay double redundancy,so ill get 6 weeks pay, and all being well as i have been in work for 3 years the job centre may give me a little help then!
