For you not to have to work... What would your lifestyle be like...

I gave up work when I realised my salary wouldn't cover 2 in childcare. Dh was earning about £65k a year then. My salary was always my sort of pocket money (i was on about 15k in an admin type role) giving up work didn't realy effect us in any way at all financially.

I agree with teanosugar. It is all about choice and priorities. A lot of our friends are in serious debt even though when ds was younger these families were 2 holidays a year big cars houses etc. We did ok but never prioritised these things. Funnily now we are in a position where we could have/do these things and a lot of our friends are in serious shit financially! Why does this sort of question always refer to the mans job what about how much would you have to earn for your partner to stay home and look after the children.

DH earns 46k and we'll have to scrape by when I stop working in 4 weeks. We owe 15k in debt so some definite tightening of belts will be done including giving up smoking and drinking. But we're young we'll manage! Smile

He would need to earn around 80k to make up for my loss of earnings, but I would never want to give up work. I would go mad!

We're finding out - but the other way round, as redundancy/early retirement is looming for DH. I can expect to work for another 15 years or so. We will notice the drop in income ( we are supporing 2 students away from home!). However, we have been practising - he's saved most of his salary from the last year, and we do have other savings, so we'll manage, financially. What's he going to do all day? He has no idea, but that's a whole other thread.

No amount of money because I like having financial independence and being able to squander money on shoes and expensive creams things I deem essential without anybody judging me for it. I would simply feel too guilty about it if I had not earnt it.
