Claiming Child Benefit...

I have a bit of an odd question, and can't find the answer online! If anyone could answer me this, before I ring CHB (and sit on the phone for hours!) I'd be very grateful!

I currently claim CHB for my DS. Me and my new partner are having a baby. Because he will be dropping his hours at work, we think it is sensible for him to claim CHB for this new baby to protect his pension as he won't be earning enough for NI contributions.

What worries me though is if CHB pay us both eldest child rate, as this would probably be wrong? Wouldn't it? Would that even be possible? I just don't want to have any hassle! Just want to protect DP's pension!! DP isn't DS's father, but obviously I am mum to both, so what happens in these cases??

He wouldn't get eldest child rate; my neighbour is in a similar situation and lets his ex-partner claim CHB for the second child, he and his partner claim for eldest. The rate doesn't go up simply because one is claiming for one and one for another. Assuming you live in the UK and the current CHB is around £20, second child rates are around £12. If your partner claimed for the second child, he would get £12 p/w.

Did that make sense? I hope so!

Hope this helps x
