Hi all, i

basically im british as were my parents but when i was born my dad retired and moved to india.(we are asian) so i lived there till i was 18 and then moved to the uk to go to uni. my dad passed away a few years ago now and i have some fixed deposits that were in his name and mine. I managed to transfer them all into my name when i went to india last year. but i was only there for a week and i wasn't able to get a clear picture on how it all worked.

anyway i dont actually have a bank account in india. i did open one when i was a student in school there it was a cass project of sorts so i think i am allowed to have an account there but im not so sure. my dh and i could really use the money and am just nt sure how i can get the money into my account in the uk. will i have to go back to india and open an account?

has anybody been in this sort of siuation and can offer any sort of advice please.

Can you call the financial institution that holds your deposits and ask what they suggest? Some overseas banks have branches in the UK

Thanks for your reply, there is no branch here and i really dont want to call india nd rack up a massive bill. will have to do it as a last resort though i think.

A telephone bill will be cheaper than a trip to India. :) Even if they don't have branches in the UK they may have links with sister companies or partners that do. Given the size of the Indian diaspora settled in the UK over the last decades, I'd be amazed if there wasn't some commercial connection.

Agree with Cogito about the relative cost of phone bill vs air fare. Why don't you give the financial institution a ring and ask what other people do/have done. I'm sure they do this kind of thing all the time.

Sorry, posted too quickly. Meant to add: If not, why not speak to a bank here such as Barclays or HSBC. I -know- they do this kind of thing all the time!

Have you got Probate documents? Are you the Executor?

If not, how will the bank know that you are the person entitled to the money?

mumsachocoholic · 08/03/2012 12:33

its not in the will or anything.. they are fixed deposits which my dad put my name and his on.

so how will the bank know that you are the person entitled to the money?

mumsachocoholic · 08/03/2012 14:39

because it has my name on the actual fixed deposit certificate.
