Smellyanne · 01/03/2012 10:43

If we move to a different council tax area now, having paid our council tax in full where we are now, would we start our payments in the new area right now or would the payments start in April? TIA

you dont normally pay in feb and march so you would start from april (I would think)

Seona1973 · 01/03/2012 10:46

i.e. it is paid over 10 months and not paid in feb and march

Smellyanne · 01/03/2012 10:49

Thankyou :-)

This happened to us - we got a pro-rata refund form our last council for Feb and March. The C tax starts from the day you move in so you will get a bill from your new council for Feb and March. Then a new bill for 2012-13

The payments cover 12 months so if you had paid say £1200, you would get £200 back for Feb and March which can be used to pay in the new council

DaisySteiner · 01/03/2012 10:51

I disagree. Although you pay over 10 months, you are effectively paying in advance for Feb and March rather than them being free. I think you would be refunded for March at your current address and then the council tax charge relating to the same period at your new property would be payable.

HappyCamel · 01/03/2012 10:51

They'll true up both accounts. Phone the number on your bill and they'll work it out to the day and send you a cheque as you'll have paid for twelve months worth of council tax by now. The new area will charge you from the day you move in, but you can use the refund from the first area to pay the second.

I believe that you would be responsible for council tax in the new area for the period 1 mar - 5 apr (or whenever you move) and the person who moves out of the house you move into will be refunded for that period.

Additionally, you would need to apply to your current council for a refund of the council tax paid for the period 1 mar - 5 apr (or whatever your moving dates are) for your current house.

If you move to a house in a new area with roughly the same council tax charge, the amounts should of course be about the same.

We moved in to a house in march and we got a council tax bill for that month,.

CTAX is the amount divided by 365 days, so if you move out at 300 days, you pay your old council £ / 365 x 299, and the new council £ / 365 x 66. Simple.

CTAX is a 12 month charge that can be paid over 10 months (as they could ask for it all in one hit according to the legislation), and Feb and march can be used to help if people are finding it hard to meet the 10 instalments - they can be given 12 to pay over.
