Adding business cover to insurance - why is it so expensive for me?

I am currently doing a small amount of travel whilst at work on some days and in order to claim the mileage and make sure I'm covered I have to add business travel to my insurance.
My insurance company said it would be an extra £500!! Got quotes online and they all say about £200 - £400 more than I'm paying now.
I have no no claims as I have alwats been on my husbands insurance until recently, but so have some of my colleagues and they have told me they only pay an extra fiver a month!!
Am I doing something wrong???

What business are you in? That can make a big difference to the amount you pay. You can't lie about what you do, but you can be careful about how you describe it!

Also bear in mind that insurance for women has gone up and men down since last year when they changed the law about it. My policy went up by £300! and I removed commuting to become SDP only! That might be adding to the extra cost compared to what you paid last year.

Having said all that, to add business cover to my policy was several hundred pounds but I'm in one of the most expensive jobs for insurance cover!!

Business use comes in 3 different classes as explained here. Class 1 is enough for most people and shouldn't add much if anything so check you are not getting quotes for more cover than you need.
