I don't think it's mine

I rang to tell them this

Apparently I have to phone back tomorrow

I can't be bothered

As far as I'm concerned I have informed them - it's their problem now

Am I being unreasonable

no
bloody cheek to ask you to phone them back tomorrow. not like they can't afford the phone call.
given that some administrator has probably now forgotten your call thinking that you'll ring back tomorrow, you could always scribble it down on a piece of paper and pop it into the bank (but only when you're passing).

QE2 · 26/01/2006 17:43

I would put it aside and wait for them to claim it. If you spent it, depending on the amount, you might struggle to repay it later. As it is a mistake I don't think you have a right to keep it.

But then I am far too honest. But can't see how you could get away with or justify keeping it tbh.

QE2 · 26/01/2006 17:44

How much are we talking here btw??

peachygirl · 26/01/2006 17:45

it's not £230 is it? we have just mislaid this with some cheques being cashed but not into our account!

katymac · 26/01/2006 18:04

Just under £200

They have no facilities for making outbound calls - I have informed them - it really is their problem now

oh well it was worth a try LOL

lalaa · 26/01/2006 18:07

'they have no facilities for making outbound calls'. good grief. i hope you never have to pay it back!

mummytosteven · 26/01/2006 18:07

agree with QE2 about setting it aside. because you know it is a mistake, the bank would be legally entitled to get it back from you.

littlemissbossy · 26/01/2006 18:09

Katy, I hope you never have to pay it back too!!! however, they probably will find it sooner or later. Agree with everyone else really, make a note of the date/time/who you spoke to to report this and wait and see...

i know someone who paid for their honeymoon (in the maldives), went on it, came back to find out that the money hadn't gone through, told them and they never did anything about it. a honeymoon in the maldives for free!

littlemissbossy · 26/01/2006 18:40

lalaa
tell me which bank, I want to open an account with them

littlerach · 26/01/2006 18:42

So how long would it be before they could not ask for it back?

Say if you kept it and in 3 or 5 years time they asked for it, could you keep it?

katymac · 26/01/2006 18:42

It IS mine apparently the Inland Revenue have paid a cheque into our account

It matches a refund we were expecting

However I've never known the IR paying in a chq - it's always been a bacs transfer before

It's a bit odd

Barcalys used to do that to me regualry..... (about 4 times) so i changed account

stopped using it but never got round to closing it...

In October i had a letter telling me i was about £400 Over drawn , and that i had been charged £25 for going over drawn. Went in and they found it was their mistake and a bank error so as a GOOD* WILL GESTURE they decided to refund me the £25 (how very kind

i was then not allowed to close the account cause it was "over drawn"

I was sooo cross i called them and got them to give me £20 for free (to cover my time and petrol apparently!)

My DH phoned a storecard type thing (one of those deals when you have to pay it off within so many months or they really whack you for interest) today that he has made one purchase on to ask where to send the cheque to pay it off, to be told he is due nothing, he asked the girl for a statement and she said I can't give you a statement there are no transactions on your account, nothing has been purchased as far as they are concerned.

ShaysMummy · 26/01/2006 23:48

if summat gets paid into your bank and noone does anything about it, you can keep it after a month i think or maybe six. one or the other, a bit rusty. im a silly bitch who works in a bank. im due back from maternity leave next week, hence i cant quite remember...
