Tax credits being stopped - confused

Cloudminnow · 17/02/2012 22:44

We had a letter today saying the tax credits will no longer be paid to joint incomes of £26K plus. Does this mean that joint household income can't exceed £26K, or does it mean neither partner can earn more than this? For example could each partner earn £25K and still receive it?

curiousmind do you know about paying the amount over threshold into a pension thus pulling yourself back under threshold?

Llareggub · 24/02/2012 21:16

This is all very odd. I rang them earlier this week because I start a new full-time job on Monday so needed to tell them about my increased income and additional childcare expenses. I spoke to a very helpful chap who told me what I'd get with effect from April, with no mention of me getting nothing.

However, I do have two children and pay into a pension, so maybe that is it? Unless they apply today's rules with no mention of post-April rules?

Llareggub · 24/02/2012 21:24

I think it must be due to my pension and the amount I fork out for childcare, looking at the link. Yikes.

CURIOUSMIND · 24/02/2012 22:24

ANTagony, Thank you very much. That's very practical tip.Unfortunately,it won't work for us, but certainly will work for somebody.
Arf at the £200 a month music lessons and saving for new piano! Such hardships to be endured!
It is ,to be honest. But that's for my children, so I am doing it and will continue whatever.

A bit rant on the day receiving the letter. Now it's over for me.
If somebody still can't get it, then that's it.Usually politicians, celebrities, bankers, benefit receivers won't understand this.
Sorry, if this did your head in.

oksonowwhat · 25/02/2012 23:44

Blimey!!! How the other half live hey!!! I am a single parent of older children, one still in full time education. I worked 90 hours last week and have bumped up my yearly salary to approx 14,000....not much hey!!!

My, very talented daughter has had to give up her dancing lessons as the money is just not available. I never wanted this to happen but it has and will change the career path she had hoped to follow from a very young age. Such a shame and it upsets me every day. But theres nothing i can do about it, apart from keep working and hope i can earn more in the future.

I get a small amount of Working tax credits and child tax credits at the moment and that pays to keep a roof over our heads.

I wish i had your dilema!

Catsdontcare · 25/02/2012 23:51

I'm very confused about the new threshold our letter said the new limit was £13000 for a single household or £18000 for a joint household Confused

CURIOUSMIND · 26/02/2012 00:16

Oksonowwhat,I know exactly how you feel about the dance lesson. If there is any possibiliy ,please carry on.I know you have to cut something, but please try somewhere else.
Don't give it up.

RedHelenB · 26/02/2012 08:18

If she is talented there are government paid for CATS lessons - could you ask her old dance teacher about these? 90 hours is an excessive amount to work but are you self employed?

clare8allthepies · 26/02/2012 08:22

Cats those are the thresholds for working tax credits

FannyFifer · 26/02/2012 08:31

£200 per month on music lessons and saving for a new piano, ffs,
Not what tax credits was designed to help with.
We use ours usually to buy food.

Methe · 26/02/2012 08:32

Food here too.

CURIOUSMIND · 26/02/2012 13:25

Sad, so sad.

Kaloobear · 26/02/2012 16:54
Hmm
Catsdontcare · 27/02/2012 12:24

Oh that's even odder we don't claim working tax credits Confused

Ryoko · 27/02/2012 18:37

I'm confused by all this shit I got a letter saying my TC will be stopped too, thing is DF earns under 26k a year (he gets just under 25k) and my work is random, I worked a few weekends the year before but I've only done about 2 sundays worth in the last year and a half..

It says contact them to continue the claim, how? I can't prove my lack of income until I get my P60 or what ever it's called in April but it says I have to claim it by March? what do I do just phone that 0345 number and say I don't want it stopped?. I don't understand this crappy letter.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 28/02/2012 08:18

"It says contact them to continue the claim, how? "

You must have kept your payslips for this year. Add them up and declare that as your income.

Ryoko · 28/02/2012 19:33

Got no payslips just get the P whatever in April, I'll ring em tomorrow or next week

DaisySteiner · 28/02/2012 19:35

We had a letter last year about phoning up to continue the claim. We didn't need to provide evidence of income, just phoned up and said we would like to renew our claim in April and we were duly sent the forms. HTH.

Grockle · 28/02/2012 19:41

Eeek, how did I not know this? I earn just over the limit, I think but only by a few pounds. This is going to make things tough.

Llareggub · 29/02/2012 07:19

Don't panic Grockle. So lomg as you've got 2 or more children and pay childcare you should still get omething.

CagneyNLacey · 29/02/2012 13:09

Fuck, does this mean we'll no longer get help with childcare? Between us we earn just on the cut off point and get about 40% of childcare costs for our one child. Dont get wtc or anything else and I cant see how we can pay childcare costs without that help. But we cant afford for me not to work either. And not so I can pay for a fucking piano like the poster further upthread.

CURIOUSMIND · 29/02/2012 13:26

Don't say F* piano. You are parent to a child. If you find your child is so interested in,good at something may lead to a career then you will invest on it, will you?
I spend my child tax credit or benefit money on my children's future!

What is Child tax credit desighned for?Buying food for the family?Lucky, you got the child to feed you!

CagneyNLacey · 29/02/2012 13:40

Biscuit for you, you crank Grin

Kaloobear · 29/02/2012 16:22

What does 'you got the child to feed you' mean?! No, benefits are not for pianos. If you can afford to be saving for a piano then in my opinion you do not need the benefits. Unlike people who need it to buy food, childcare, rent etc. You come across as utterly ridiculous.

glastocat · 29/02/2012 16:29

Arf at saving for a new piano!
