Tax return panic - where do book royalties go??

I know, I've left it right until the last minute again, I deserve a kick up the bum for doing so - but I started doing my tax return under self-assessment online and then realised that I have NO CLUE where to file my royalties payments! I am currently not in any employment, self or otherwise - I have to file a return because my house is rented out - but I don't know where these blasted royalties are supposed to fit in!

Can anyone please help me? I've tried googling and it really didn't help - the only HMRC site I got up was for Tax Credits and that's just not relevant.

Thanks!

Is it not just income like any other? It's still taxable presumably?

Merrylegs · 30/01/2012 11:53

earned income.

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/01/2012 11:57

I would assume that it is treated as taxable income but, to make sure, you should call the HMRC helpline.

Merrylegs · 30/01/2012 11:57

(similarly any payments you receive from your books - eg PLR, ACLS -all count as income as they aren't taxed at source).

Thumbwitch · 30/01/2012 12:13

Yes but which page does it go on? As I am not filling in any Employment or Self Employment page, I don't know where to put it - as in the only pages I fill in are the general and the income from property - is it in the general pages?
This "Tailoring" of the tax return is all very well if you know where stuff goes, but I don't! Blush
(first year I've had this situation, btw - I've been filing my tax return via self assessment for over a decade now)

What I mean is, at the start of the self-assessment they ask yo which pages you need to fill in - and I know I need to do the property one but I don't know if I need to select any of the others, as book royalties isn't a page by itself.

I'm probably not making this very clear.

Oh. OK. Am not exactly sure as my accountant does mine BUT is there not a box you can tick when tailoring the form (perhaps pg 2?) that says 'any other income'.

If not, it is part of your general income-so logically, I would say same place as your rental income.

Thumbwitch · 30/01/2012 12:50

nope - to start with it just asks which pages you need to fill in and "any other income" isn't an option, sadly.
I suppose "any other income" must be on the general pages along with dividends and bank interest etc. - my big dilemma was whether I had to fill in some stupid employment page, when it's only royalties - but I think you all have helped clarify that I don't need to do that, I can just shove it in under "Any other income" whenever I find that slot.

Thanks! God I hate tax returns - next year and I say this every sodding year I will NOT leave it until the last minute!

There is a section called any other income, and that's where I put my income from examining GCSEs. I think it's called 'other UK income not included on the supplementary pages' (I do a paper return). It's box 16 on the section that starts with interest from banks.

Hope that helps.

Quodlibet · 30/01/2012 12:58

Surely it's just income from self employment? You may not have carried out any self employed work this year but you are receiving income derived from work which is not taxed at source. That's just the nature of that line of work I think.

My partner is a musician and his income from PRS which is kind of he equivalent to royalties just goes in his income column.

SuePurblybilt · 30/01/2012 13:00

Sounds complicated, do HMRC reply to emails? I know you can't easily ring them from Australia Grin

Quodlibet · 30/01/2012 13:00

Scaryteacher not wanting to scare you but surely that's taxable income too? If its income you earn by fruit of your labours that isn't taxed at source then you need to declare it as SE income surely?

CogitoErgoSometimes · 30/01/2012 13:02

You'll need to get hold of some extra pages by the sound of it. Can you print the whole form off from the HMRC website?

Thumbwitch · 30/01/2012 13:22

thanks all - I have had help elsewhere as well and I THINK that box 16 on the main pages is the answer.
I am not self-employed because I am not a writer - this was a one-off book that pays me a teeny amount of royalties that are taxed at source - but that was my dilemma, whether or not I had to claim to be self-employed off the back of this one book. I don't think I do and thank fuck for that :)

Thanks all! very helpful. Thanks and Wine all round (or Brew if it's too early for you)

Quod - it is taxed, thanks. However, as I am not permanently employed, but only once a year, then that is where it goes on the return. I then have to wait a year (even though I am not employed in UK as I don't live there) to claim the tax back.

MrAnchovy · 30/01/2012 16:36

I THINK that box 16 on the main pages is the answer.

If this was a one-off book you did so you do not have (part time) self-employment as a writer this is the correct place.

Thumbwitch · 01/02/2012 00:14

Thanks all - that is where I put it, and commented in the box that the book was a one-off as well, to be on the safe side. All done and dusted now, will know for next year! :)
